I see that Murray State is down 21-0 in the second quarter at Louisville. Dustin Thomas made his first freshman mistake on fourth and long, throwing an interception when he misread safety coverage and missed Dorian Wells in the end zone. The Wildcats have to avoid more turnovers if they want to win this one.
Lawrence Doss broke through the Temple line on third and one and broke free for 28 yards to the Temple 28. It's going to be a long night for the Owls, if they don't learn to tackle better. New QB Dustin Thomas narrowly missed a potential TD pass to a wide open Dorian Wells on the next play.
Wildcat receive Mikey Reynolds took a pitch on the option on the first play from scrimmage and ran for a first down to the VU 35.
Keeler was going off on the spot a lot in the post-game session that just ended. And rightfully so. Bad job mostly on the chain gang, who moved the clip TOO SOON. I don't know where the chain gang came from, if they were SoCon, or some local guys, but you never move the clip. The review was also called for TOO LATE. But you still give credit to EWU for making the most of its chances for the third game in a row. They were a team of destiny.
Final Stats: Delaware 80 plays, 417 yards, 197 rushing, 220 passing (Devlin was 22-of-34). EWU 327 yards total, 302 passing, 21 carries for 25 yards rushing. Mitchell was 29-of-43 for 302 and three TDs. Andrew Pierce 28 carries, 142 yards and one TD for UD. Brandon Kaufman (my personal player of the game) had nine catches for 120 yards and two TDs. J.C. Sherrett had 18 tackles and Zach Johnson had 15, including that huge last-minute sack. Paul Worrilow led the Blue Hens with nine tackles and Anthony Walters added eight.
Delaware relaxed a little too much. I don't think choke is the right word. Fans coming out of the stadium were complaining about the passive nickel coverage in the second half and little pressure on Mitchell. I was surprised Delaware didn't attack more with a 19-0 lead.
The extra point was the margin of victory, but more important were the times EWU held Delaware without touchdowns in the red zone.
My impression outside of the TV coverage that I crucified and praised (rightfully), UD looked like they choked and underestimated the ability of EWU to come back and knock them out, which EWU did.
Congrats to EWU on a great comeback and a national championship. Turned out to be a great second half and an awesome finish.
The missed extra point was killer.
the "NCAA FCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME" is over, just ask espen one more time folks... these people are idiots
Mitchell is a transfer too? Ask the announcers!
This has been the type of championship game you like to see. A close one to the end. Delaware missed those opportunities early to put the game away.
Unless something weird happens, Eastern Washington will win a national championship few expected them to win.
Just short! Congratulations to the Eagles - your national champions. Oh yeah, a huge assist from the refs - on the spot.
A shoe-string catch as Devlin was pressured by Schenauer came up a yard short with 47 seconds left.
With 52 seconds left, the game is on the line.
A completion to Rob Jones sets up fourth and nine from the 38.
Keeler will go for this. No way on the long FG attempt.
Great defensive call for the sack.
