One of the things I have loved for years about the Football Championship Subdivision is the fact that you can catch up on teams around the country by watching Thursday night games.

Tonight, I am viewing the Murray State battle against Tennessee-Martin on Ohio Valley Conference Television and watching Hampton host Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the week on ESPNU.

Tennessee-Martin, which suffered a disheartening one-point loss in its OVC opener against league favorite Jacksonville State, didn't waste any time in jumping on Murray State — a team that many expected to challenge for the OVC crown.

The hometown Skyhawks burst out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Murray State turned a blocked punt into points a few plays later and added a field goal to cut it to 28-9 midway through the second period,

UTM came back with a field goal of its own after penalties killed the chance for seven points to reestablish some momentum at 31-9.

Bethune-Cookman and Hampton survived nearly an hour of lightning delays before finally getting started down near the Virginia coast.

Bethune-Cookman, facing a must win to stay in the MEAC race, dealt with the delay better and scored on a 10-play drive, with QB Jamarr Robinson traveling the final eight yards on an option play for the touchdown with about nine and a half minutes left in the first period.

It should be a fun evening of FCS play.

LYNCHBURG, VA. — There is an electric atmosphere at Williams Stadium tonight as James Madison and Liberty faced off before a packed stadium.

JMU has had its issues on offense, so it was surprising to see the Dukes take the ball after winning the coin toss. It proved to be a good move by coach Mickey Matthews as the Dukes broke free to their own 45 on the opening kickoff.

After two awful option plays accounted for negative yardage, JMU quarterback Justin Thorpe put a throw up for grabs on third down. Liberty's secondary played too passively on the pass for a long first down to Renard Robinson for 31 yards.

Tailback Dae'Quan Scott followed with a quick burst for 24 yards to set up his three-yard TD run a few plays later. JMU marched 55 yards in seven plays, burning almost four minutes off the clock to take an early 7-0 lead.

TOWSON, MD. — It's better late than never as I traveled the three hours from Lehigh University to Towson University for the second game of my doubleheader as Villanova and Towson open Colonial Athletic Association play.

I arrived in the press box just in time to watch Towson score on a 47-yard screen pass Grant Enders to Dominique Booker as the Tigers took a 7-0 lead.

Both teams moved the ball well on their first drives of the quarter, but only Towson was rewarded.

The last time I was at Johnny Unites Stadium for a regular-season game, it was to watch Hofstra beat Towson. Yes, Hofstra used to play CAA football, for all of you with short-term memory loss.

In driving up to the stadium for this game and walking to the press box, I loved the sense of enthusiasm I felt in the crowd and you couldn't help but notice how many students were making their way to the game.

This is a huge game for these two teams as they battle to find their place in the tough CAA this season.

Towson is trying to build on the momentum of a strong off-season and last week's 42-3 victory over Morgan State.

Villanova is attempting to show it still is one of the elite teams in FCS, after last week's disheartening 42-7 loss to a very good FBS club, Temple.

Patrick Hagerty of Villanova tipped a punt late in the first period to give the Wildcats excellent field position at the Tiger 19.

That set up Nick Yako for a 28-yard field goal attempt from the right hash as the second quarter began.

But showing some of the shakiness he encountered last season, Yako missed the kick narrowly wide to the right to leave the score at 7-0, Towson.

BOONE, N.C. — It's a quiet Sunday afternoon after covering three games in three days — including Saturday's doubleheader of Appalachian State-Virginia Tech and Montana-Tennessee — and I am taking in Bethune-Cookman and Prairie View's matchup on ESPN in the MEAC-SWAC Challenge.

One of these days, I'll make it down to Orlando, Fl. for this classic, but today I am in recuperation mode as I watched Villanova and Temple play in person on Thursday night at the Mayor's Cup game at Lincoln Financial Field, took in Youngstown State-Michigan State on the Big Ten Network on Friday evening before starting on my 24-hour marathon on Saturday.

Somehow, I managed to fit in delayed broadcasts of Murray State's Thursday night's competitive loss to Louisville and Arizona State's romp over UC-Davis later the same night.

I left the Philadelphia suburbs before 5 a.m. on Saturday to drive to Blacksburg, Va. After watching Virginia Tech quickly dispatch ASU (I'm calling it a first-round TKO), I traveled on to Knoxville, Tn. to see Tennessee take care of Montana after an hour-and-a-half thunderstorm delay.

I finally managed to slip into my bed at my second home in Boone at about 5 a.m. on Sunday.

One thing is certain, it seems like blowout are following me.

Can I see an actual good game?

Is that too much to ask?

The way some of these Prairie View players are performing, I have to wonder if they have led a similar schedule to me in recent days.

In their first game of the post Henry Frazier era, the Panthers have done practically everything wrong in falling behind Bethune-Cookman 42-0 in the first half.

It's been a long debut for new PVAM head coach Heishma Northern, Frazier's hand-picked succesor before the two-time CSN coach of the year left to rebuild the North Carolina Central program.

The high-powered Wildcats — coming off a MEAC tri-championship and an NCAA playoff berth — have taken maximum advantage of Prairie View's penalties, assignment breakdowns and turnovers to overwhelm the Panthers.

After the Wildcats held on fourth down in B-CU territory, Jamarr Robinson turned a nice opening drive into success with a 10-yard touchdown jaunt.

Since then, PVAM has self-destructed.

Isidore Jackson scored from a yard out after a Jarkevis Fields interception to make it 14-0 at the end of the first period.

Bethune-Cookman then erupted with 28 points in the second quarter.

KNOXVILLE, Tn. — I made the three-hour trek from Blacksburg, Va and Virginia Tech to arrive at historic Neyland Stadium just in time for a major thunderstorm to move through campus.

Shortly after the national anthem, the Tennessee band was moved into a nearby tunnel and fans were asked to take cover. In a nearby parking structure, tailgating tents were being blown around by heavy winds and lightning strikes were flashing throughout the stadium area.

Heavy rain also blanketed the stadium as a storm cell passed through. At 7:10 p.m., we are still looking at 30 minutes more of delays before the teams begin play.

It will be interesting to see how Montana reacts to the delay.

Could it be a positive thing that will make Tennessee more nervous and the Grizzlies more relaxed when play finally begins?

Or will it have the opposite effect?

Montana has experience with delays. Grizzly sports information director Dave Guffey told me, as we watched the rain pummel the glass of the Tennessee press box, that there had been a similar storm blow through Washington-Grizzly Stadium before last year's season-opener with Western State.

Tennessee might not be Western State, but maybe the storm is a good omen for Montana, which is 7-20 lifetime against FBS opponents.

BLACKSBURG, Va. — You have to wonder what is going on at one of the country's most renown technological colleges when the wireless Internet runs at a slower speed than dial-up.

Such is the problem at Virginia Tech on the opening Saturday of the college football season as the FCS-No. 13-ranked Hokies take on the No. 2 ranked team in FCS, Appalachian State.

To tell the truth, the problems of the Virginia Tech Internet — being blamed on too much usage by fans in the stands — kind of symbolizes the struggles of the Mountainers in the first quarter of this game.

On the second play from scrimmage, All-American quarterback DeAndre Presley missed a handoff and fumbled the ball to Virginia Tech.

One play later, the Hokies' dynamic running back David Wilson dashed 20 yards for a touchdown to give Tech a 7-0 lead, just 47 seconds into the game.

ASU gave up huge junks of yardage on the Hokies' second possession, but stiffened to hold Tech to a 28-yard Cody Journell field goal, but Josh Oglesby rumbled four yards on the next Tech drive — following a long punt return to the Mountaineer 25 — to extend the lead to 17-0 in the first quarter.

After losing to James Madison 21-16 last year, Virginia Tech looks like it has come out with enough fire to avoid being embarrassed by an FCS team again.

Unless ASU gets its offense going, it could be a very long day for the Mountaineers.

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple band is on the turf at Lincoln Financial Field, some awful singer wearing Owls paraphernalia is warbling through an awful rendition of the national anthem and we are minutes away from the third annual Mayor's Cup here in the City of "Brotherly (to use the term loosely) Love."

It is also hard to believe that Temple is playing the rather time-worn theme from Rocky as Steve Addazio (an FCS alum who played at Central Connecticut State) and its new coaching staff gets ready to come on the field with its team.

I have to wonder right now if former Temple coach Al Golden is feeling forlorn as he considers why he ever left Philly to take the job at Miami?

Villanova's veteran coach Andy Talley has seen a lot of coaches come and go in his 27 years on the Main Line and he will probably out-live quite a few more Temple coaches.

After seeing a crowd of 32,193 show up last year for this burgeoning FCS-FBS rivalry, I am disappointed to see a lot of empty seats tonight in the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Hopefully there are still a lot of people either still tailgating (a Villanova tradition is to show up fashionably late for games), or stuck in some awful rush-hour traffic.

One fan who made it on time is Philadelphia mayor and first-class attention whore Michael Nutter, who was on the field to conduct the coin toss. Temple won the toss and deferred to the second half, which will give the Villanova Wildcats the opening possession.

And it's time for some college football.

Delaware and Eastern Washington have survived plenty of challenges since then and now are ready to face off for a true national championship.

NEWARK, De. — The question on everyone from Georgia Southern's on Saturday was the weather forecast for the Eagles' NCAA Division I Football Championship semifinal game with Delaware.

Two days ago, this region received snow and temperatures have hovered in the 20s for much of the week. Not exactly the kind of forecast for a team like GSU that runs the triple option.

But as we head towards the noon kickoff here, the temperatures have warmed from 28 an hour ago to 33 on this sunny day, with an expected high of 35. Not exactly south Georgia heat, but still warm enough for the Eagles tradition-shrouded attack.

Delaware has long enjoyed a significant home-field advantage at Tubby Raymond Field and will have no problem with the weather. But the Blue Hens thus far have a disappointing crowd, with plenty of empty seats in a venue that is used to 20,000 fans.

The No. 3-seeded Blue Hens (11-2) expected to be here after going 9-2 in the regular season and winning a share of the Colonial Athletic Association championship.

Georgia Southern has a championship pedigree as long as Delaware's, but the Eagles hadn't been to the playoffs in five years since AD Sam Baker junked the triple option for a pair of unsuccessful coaches.

But GSU went back to its roots under Jeff Monken this year and have won six straight games, including three in a row in the playoffs, to go from 4-4 to 9-4 and a shot at the national championship game with one more victory.

With the constrast of styles and the rich traditions of the two teams, this should be a great game.

The first look at the red turf of Roos Field on ESPN2 tonight and all I can say is WOW. Hopefully, I can still stand to look at the screen three hours from now as No. 1 ranked Eastern Washington hosts Villanova in the NCAA Division I Football Championship semifinals in Cheney, Wa.

EWU calls its new digs "The Inferno" and the Eagles are undefeated here this season. Temperatures are suppose to dip into the 20s, from the 5 p.m. local starting weather in the 30s. At least it isn't the snow that Eastern Washington battled through in the second half of last Saturday's 38-31 overtime win over North Dakota State.

The inferno was a good name for the way the two teams got going on this Friday night.

Angelo Babbaro returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for Villanova to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. It was the second kickoff return touchdown in four games for Babbaro, who also opened the Delaware contest with a TD and the fifth of his career.

EWU answered with a five-play, 63-yard that took 2:15 and ended with a 31-yard TD pass from QB Bo Levi Mitchell to Nicholas Edwards to tie the score.

Villanova's first play from scrimmage turned into disaster when quarterback Chris Whitney botched a handoff to Aaron that Paul Ena recovered for the Eagles.

EWU marched the ball to a first and 10 at the Wildcat 14 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first period. But an illegal formation call made it first and 15 from the VU 19.

You have the winners of four of the past five national championships meeting up for the first time on a sun-splashed day with temperatures surprisingly in the low 40s, after the area was hit with snow, ice and weather in the teens earlier in the week.

All that remains of last week's snowy game here with Western Illinois (a 42-14 ASU win) is the snow lining the beautiful surroundings of the stadium known affectionately as "The Rock."

Appalachian State won the toss and went on offense first, taking the ball 72 yards in just three plays, with Travaris Cadet breaking loose, untouched for 46 yards on the zone read play for a touchdown 72 seconds into the game.

Villanova answered in typical Wildcat fashion, marching 73 yards in a methodical 12 plays. Matt Szczur, last year's playoff MVP, scored from three yards out from his signature Wildcat formation to even the score at 7 after a 5:24 drive.

ASU was moving again into Villanova territory when Cadet fumbled on a hit by strong safety John Dempsey, which VU cornerback Eric Loper recovered and then handed to James Pitts.

But the Mountaineers forced a three and out from the Wildcats to leave the score at 7-7 with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter.

BOONE, N.C. — The NCAA Division I Football Committee is always full of surprises and they gave us another on Sunday with the announcement of the schedule for next weekend's Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals.

Many fans expected that the epic round-of-eight battle between top-seeded Appalachian State and defending national champion Villanova would draw the Friday night slot at 8 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN 2.

There was even speculation of that occurring as early as last Friday afternoon in the athletic offices at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

But instead, the Colonial Athletic Association matchup between New Hampshire and No. 3 seed Delaware will be played Friday at Tubby Raymond Field.

Appalachian State and Villanova were not shut out of television, however.

These two teams that have won four of the past five Division I national championships (ASU in 2005-07 and VU in 2009, with only a title for Richmond in 2008 breaking the string) will play Saturday at noon on ESPN from Kidd Brewer Stadium.

It is too early to tell if the weatherman has ordered up another snowstorm for Boone, N.C., like the Mountaineers played in last Saturday as they dominated Western Illinois 42-14.

Both the game at Delaware and the one at Appalachian State will be shown in high definition.

Early speculation is that Villanova's travel schedule out of Nacogdoches, Tx. might have been the determining factor.

Villanova played a later game and had a longer flight back to Philadelphia International Airport after the Wildcats' 54-24 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

Travel to Boone is also not all that easy, particularly with a half-a-foot of snow on the ground on Sunday.

It is nine hours by car from Philadelphia to Boone (I should know, considering I have homes in both areas.

Driving along Interstate 81, you know you are halfway to either venue when you pass Bridgeforth Stadium at James Madison University.

There are plenty of flight options to Charlotte (two hours away), Greensboro (two hours), Winston-Salem (90 minutes), the Tri-Cities of Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport, Tn. (two hours) or Raleigh-Durham (three hours).

You can also charter a flight and land in Hickory, N.C., which is an hour away, but is a smaller airport. But no matter what, you are looking at a bus ride up the mountain to Boone.

New Hampshire stayed in the same time zone as it played in Daytona Beach, Fl. and beat Bethune-Cookman 45-20 in the second round before a relatively short hop to Logan International Airport in Boston.

Another factor could be weather forecasts for the weekend.

The forecast for Boone this week is for temperatures dipping into the teens and single digits before warming up to a low of 28 degrees on Friday night.

While snow isn't currently in the forecast there is the possibility of the white stuff moving into the predictions later in the week.

Newark, De. is expecting a low of 31 degrees on Friday with partially cloudy skies.

Whatever the weather, FCS fans should be treated to two great television games.

The game between North Dakota State and Eastern Washington on the bright red turf at Woodward Stadium in Cheney, Wa. will be at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

North Dakota State might have been better served to just stay out west after beating No. 4 seed Montana State 42-17 on Saturday in Bozeman, Mt.

The Bison, who have two second-half comeback wins in their first Division I playoff appearance, will be trying to beat a seeded team for the second week in a row as they take on No. 5 EWU.

NDSU will also be shooting for an interesting double. After beating one of the teams that shared the Big Sky Conference title in Montana State, the Bison will draw the other co-champion this Saturday.

Montana State beat Eastern Washington 30-7 during the regular season, so a big win by NDSU over the Bobcats doesn't bode well for the Eagles this weekend.

We are still awaiting news on when the other quarterfinal game between Southern Conference Georgia Southern and Wofford at in Spartanburg, S.C.

I am rooting for a night game at what should be a more balmy Gibbs Stadium, so that I might be able to catch two quarterfinals in the same day, something I accomplished in 2007 when covering Eastern Washington's loss against Appalachian State in Boone and Richmond's win over Wofford in Spartanburg.

Those two SoCon outposts are separated by less than three hours.

It might only be Sunday, but I for one can't wait for Friday to come around for the next round of great matchups.

Check back on this blog for more scheduling developments later in the day.

You have the all-business Wildcats going against the fun-loving Lumberjacks.

SFA, led by quarterback Jeremy Moses, found their way around the bar scene last year in the quarterfinals at Missoula, Mt. and were whacked 51-0 by Montana.

The Lumberjacks committed 10 turnovers that day.

A couple of weeks later, Villanova was all business when it met Montana in the Football Championship Subdivision title game. Then the Wildcats went out and ground out a 23-21 victory over the Grizzlies.

This year, SFA rolled through the regular season for the first back-to-back Southland Conference crowns in school history, while Villanova struggled through an injury-plagued campaign.

But the Wildcats beat arch-rival and then-top-ranked Delaware in the final game of the regular season to squeeze into the 20-team field with an at-large berth.

On the field, SFA is the consumate run and gun, wide-open passing team, while Villanova like to pound teams into submission behind what James Madison coach Mickey Matthews called "the best offensive line in CAA history" earlier this season.

It is definitely a matchup of contrasts and should be a great game today at SFA.

BOONE, N.C. — Snow was lightly falling on the field turf at Kidd Brewer Stadium as Western Illinois kicked off to Appalachian State to start this second-round FCS playoff game.

This stadium is located in one of the most beautiful settings in college football, but today is even more pretty with snow flocking the trees and rooftops and the nearby mountainsides.

I awoke to snow at my house about 7 a.m. and by the time I arrived at the stadium three hours later, the snow was falling at a brisk pace.

In the early moments of this game, the weather conditions looked like they would play a major role, with lots of slipping and sliding.

Both teams had trouble getting their offenses untracked early, with both defenses forcing three and outs.

The referee ignored a running-into-the-kicker play on the first punt from ASU's Sam Martin.

Western Illinois punter Chris Fuchs dropped the snap on his punt, but recovered to send a low liner down the field to the ASU 29, avoiding disaster early for the Leathernecks.
