The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are unanimous No. 1 Major Division: The Alcorn State Braves drop key game in the SWAC Eastern Division Race
The unanimous No. 1 Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (8-1, 5-0) defensively smothered, 38-14, the North Carolina Central Eagles (4-5, 2-3). The Wildcats earned all 12 first-place votes and 112 points in the poll rankings this week. The Wildcats will host the Norfolk State Spartans (2-6, 2-2) this Saturday. The Jackson State Tigers move up to the second ranked team in Dr. Cavil’s HBCU Major Division poll rankings without playing. The No. 2 Jackson State Tigers (7-2, 7-0) were open this past weekend.
The Jackson State Tigers will travel to Huntsville, AL to take on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (3-6, 3-4) and with a win, the Tigers will lock up the Eastern Division Championship and earn a trip to the SWAC Championship Game in Houston at Reliant Stadium on Saturday, December 7. The Tigers earned 93 points in the poll rankings.
On the other hand, the Bulldogs are coming off of an upset win, 19-18, over the sixth ranked Alcorn State Braves (7-3, 5-2). The No. 6 Braves will host the No. 9 Prairie View A&M Panthers (5-4, 4-3). This game will be an ESPNU featured SWAC Game of the Week this Thursday night at 6:30pm CT. A loss by the Panthers will give the Western Division crown and a spot in the SWAC Championship Game to the eighth ranked Southern Jaguars (5-4, 5-2).
The No. 3 South Carolina State Bulldogs (6-3, 4-1) defeated, 45-9, the Savannah State Tigers (1-9, 0-6). The Bulldogs travel to Florida to face the Florida A&M Rattlers (3-6, 2-3). The Rattlers won a defensive, 16-6, contest over the Norfolk State Spartans last Saturday. The Bulldogs collected 89 points in week 10 of Dr. Cavil’s HBCU Major Division poll rankings.
The No. 4 Tennessee State Tigers (7-3, 4-2) lost ,44-0, in a lackluster shutout performance to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels as well as any probable at-large bid to the NCAA FCS Playoffs with their second consecutive loss in the OVC and third on season. The fourth ranked Tennessee State Tigers received 82 points this week. The Tigers will seek to rebound this week as they host the Austin Peay Governors (0-9, 0-5).
The No. 5 Alabama State Hornets lost, 48-14, to the Kentucky Wildcats of the SEC. The Alabama State Hornets (6-3, 6-1) will host the No. 8 Southern Jaguar (5-4, 5-2) in a key SWAC inter-divisional matchup between two teams seeking a SWAC divisional crown. The fifth ranked Hornets earned 68 points in this week’s poll rankings. The eighth ranked Jaguars defeated the Texas Southern Tigers (2-7, 2-6) last Friday night in Houston, 31-24.
The No. 7 North Carolina A&T Aggies (5-3, 2-3) earned a non-conference homecoming victory, 59-12, over the Virginia-Lynchburg Dragons (2-6). The Aggies will enter back into conference action this week traveling to Maryland to face the Morgan State Bears (3-6, 3-2). The Bears won a tough conference game, 30-27, against a red hot Hampton Pirates (3-6, 3-2), who had won their past three games before this loss. The No. 10 Delaware State Hornets (4-5, 4-2) enter back into poll rankings this week after defeating, 22-20, the Howard Bison (3-6, 2-4). The Hornets are open this week.
The North Carolina Central Eagles (4-5, 2-3) fell out of the top 10 poll rankings this week after losing 45-9 to the third ranked South Carolina State Bulldogs (6-3, 4-1). There were not any teams outside of Dr. Cavil’s Top 10 poll rankings receiving points in week 10.
