  • SWAC Championship Game Decided; Wildcats' loss opens back up MEAC race

    Last week the victory by Jackson State over Alabama A&M clinched the SWAC Eastern Division for the Tigers, while the loss by Prairie View A&M to Alcorn State decided the SWAC Eastern Division for Southern. The teams meet for the SWAC Championship Game in Houston at Reliant Stadium on December 7th. In the MEAC an upset win by Norfolk State over Bethune-Cookman opened the race for the MEAC playoff auto-bid.

    #4 Alcorn State Braves (8-3, 6-2) at #1 Jackson State Tigers (8-2, 8-0)

    Jackson State will look to close out the regular season with a perfect record in conference play, as they prepare for their in-state rival the Alcorn State Braves, this game was labeled as the Capital City Classic until last year when the Braves, at the conclusion of the contract, move the game back to campus. The game is in Jackson this year. The Blue Bengals came away from Huntsville with a narrow victory, but important victory over the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M 26-20. Clayton Moore will lead the offense against the Braves second ranked defense in the SWAC. The Braves have allowed only 3,749 yards and 33 touchdowns this season. Meanwhile the Braves offense, ranks fourth in the SWAC in total offense. John Gibbs has compiled 2,292 passing yards and 18 touchdowns this season. The Braves have also controlled the ground game with the second leading rusher in the conference, Arnold Walker. The has recorded 1,104 rushing and 14 touchdowns this season.

    The Tigers will close out their regular season against the Racers of Murray State. The Tigers got back to their winning ways, defeating the Austin Peay Governors, 31-6, as the offense recorded 319 yards in total offense. Running back, Tim Broughton had 21 carries for 80 yards, eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark for the season. He also became the fifth running back to accomplish this in the school’s history. The Racers will try to match the Tiger’s offense with a little of their own offense. The Racer’s strength lies in the passing game as quarterback Parks Frazier leads the offense. Frazier has assisted the Racers with two passing touchdowns in losing effort versus Eastern Illinois 37-17.

    Texas Southern University will host the Bison of Howard University this weekend in their final contest of the season for the Tigers. The Bison are coming off a strong win over the Savannah State Tigers last week, 42-14. The Bison offense recorded 559 yards against the Tigers. Quarterback Greg McGhee had an impressive game, producing 326 passing yards and two touchdowns. Mathew Colvin assisted with the effort, obtaining seven receptions for 102 receiving yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, the Maroon & Grey Tigers are coming of the road after a heartbreaking defeat to the Mississippi Valley Devils, 20-17. Quarterback Homer Causey and wide receiver Dedric Shipman will have to play well to lead the team victory over the Bison of the MEAC. The Tigers compiled 448 yards in total offense against the Devils.

    The Pirates of Hampton University will travel to Daytona to face the defending MEAC Champions Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The Wildcats came from a 14 point deficit in the fourth quarter to make the game against the Norfolk State Spartans interesting, but could not finish the comeback, ultimately falling to the Spartans, 27-24. Once again, the Wildcats face another challenge in the Pirates well balanced offense. The Pirates churned 482 yards in total offense last week against North Carolina Central winning the game, 29-21. Freshman running back Marcus Hampton finished the contest with 16 carries for 166 yards and one touchdown. Bethune-Cookman must take care of the football and avoid turnovers in this game versus the Pirates, winners of four of their last five games. The Wildcats offense is ranked first in the MEAC in total offense with an average of 384yards per game. The Pirates defense is ranked seventh among the 11members in the MEAC in total defense.

    The Prairie View A&M Panthers are coming into this weekend’s game with an attitude to finish strong, especially after coming off of last week’s loss to Alcorn State, 50-35. As a result, the Panthers were eliminated from title contention for the race of the Western Division crown for the right to play in the SWAC Football Championship Game in Houston in December. Abilene Wildcats come to Prairie View, TX with a balanced attack. Last week, the Wildcat’s offense recorded 397 yards in total offense. Senior Quarterback John David Baker (6-0, 205lbs., San Angelo, TX/Lake View HS) will lead the offense against the Panther’s defense that has given up over 500 yards in several contests this season. John compiled 279 passing yards and two touchdowns in last week loss to Incarnate Word 34-31. Assisting John, were senior wide receiver Darian Hogg, with three receptions for 91 yards.
