  • 2013 Gridiron Power Index (GPI): Regular Season Ends - NDSU #1 and the MVFC WOOFED

North Dakota State closed the regular season at #1 in the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection. Only Tennessee-Martin dropped out of the top 25. Sam Houston State fell the most at 11 places from 10 to 21 and Harvard climbed the most moving up nine spots from 24 to 15. GPI playoff field indicators are included.

    By College Sporting News

The Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Colonial Athletic Association have five teams in the top 25; the Big Sky, Ohio Valley and Southland Conferences have three each; the Ivy League has two; and the Big South Conference, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Patriot League plus the Independents have one each. (Games through 11/24/13)

The conference average rankings were unchanging at the top. The Missouri Valley Football Conference increased its lead in first, the Colonial Athletic Association and the Southland Conference stay at two and three, and the Ohio Valley and Big Sky Conferences round out the top five.

The Final 2013 GPI will be released once all the college football games have been played, in January 2014.

So bitter rivals #12T Northern Iowa and #12T Youngstown State share the "WOOFED" recognition of 2013 as the highest ranked team(s) in the GPI that were passed over by the committee for playoff selection. In fact the GPI indicated an additional two teams in #14 Southern Illinois and #20 Villanova that were also not chosen. The playoff committee decided to choose #22 Jacksonville State, #30 Samford, #33 South Carolina State and #38 Southern Utah instead. So one could say the MVFC was "WOOFED" with three squads being dismissed.
