BETHUNE-COOKMAN, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE AND TENNESSEE STATE ATTEMPT TO BREAK THE WINLESS STREAK

Bethune-Cookman will face Coastal Carolina in the second straight year that the two teams will meet in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Last year, Coastal Carolina edged out Bethune-Cookman, 24-14. Tennessee State is making its fourth appearance, the first time since 1999 when it hosts Butler. South Carolina State is the second team in MEAC history to host more than one NCAA Division I playoff game (Bethune-Cookman was the other) when Furman visits this week. The MEAC and OVC have combined for an 0-21 playoff record since 2005.

The Alabama State Hornets are ranked third in the SWAC in scoring offense with an average of 36.8 points per game. The SWAC’s second leading rusher in the conference is junior running back Isaiah Crowell (5-11, 190lbs., Columbus, GA). He will lead the offense against the Tiger’s defense. The No. 2 Tigers of Tennessee State will travel to Indianapolis to square off against the Bulldogs of Butler University. Butler has one of the best ground attacks in the Pioneer Conference. Furman passing attack will need to be at its best against this aggressive defense of South Carolina State. Sophomore quarterback Reese Hannon (6-1, 202lbs., Greer S.C) will take charge of the Paladin’s offense. He has produced 1,456 passing yards and six touchdowns this season. Hannon’s favorite wide receiving target is receiver Andrej Suttles (5-10, 182lbs., Dallas, GA). He recorded 640 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Bulldog’s defense will seek to penetrate the Paladins offense with redshirt senior linebacker Joe Thomas (6-0, 230lbs., Blackville, SC) and senior defensive back Kimari McFadden (5-11, 197lbs., Riverdale, GA) as both have combined for 183 tackles. #6 Southern Jaguars (7-4, 6-2) versus Grambling State (1-10, 1-7)
    New Orleans, Mercedes Benz Superdome
    40th Bayou Classic
    1:30pm CT, NBC

The Bayou Classic will be a historic footnote in time, as the 40th edition, between the Southern University Jaguars and the Grambling State Tigers. The SWAC West Division Champions Jags are led by the SWAC’s leading passer, senior quarterback Dray Joseph (6-0, 210lbs., Edgard, LA). He compiled 3,010 passing yards and 24 touchdowns this season. His main target this season is New Orleans native r-senior wide receiver Lee Doss (6-2, 180lbs., New Orleans, LA). Doss has recorded 930 receiving yards and seven touchdowns this season. On the other side, G-Men have had a very controversial season with the players boycotting a road game scheduled against the Jackson State Tigers hosting their homecoming. The Tigers will seek to put that all behind them as they prepare for their archrival. Put the records away in this game, because this game is traditionally a holiday classic. Quarterback Johnathan Williams has taken over the starting job after Doug Williams Jr. was diagnosed with a concussion after the game against the Texas Southern Tigers. Doug Willams, Jr compiled 1,410 and 10 touchdowns this season. But, Johnathan Williams since becoming the started has compiled 540 yards and more important has lifted the Tigers to a scoring explosion of 47 and 42 points in their last two contests. Also, Chester Rogers will be a key factor in the passing game as he compiled 702 receiving yards and five touchdowns this season.

    Key Players To Watch:
SU, R-Senior, Wide Receiver, Lee Doss (6-2, 180lbs., New Orleans, LA)
