  • CSN's GPI Is No. 1 Again

The final 2009-2010 ratings came out for measuring the FCS rankings and the result was predictable. CSN's Gridiron Power Index finished in the top spot. The GPI has never been supplanted from the top position. The three FCS polls ended up in the 30's (The Any Given Saturday and Sports Network Polls in a virtual tie at #35 and #36, and the Coaches Poll further back at #38).

Of course, the GPI is compiled of the best computer ratings and polls so finishing #1 is merely an affirmation that the correct selections were made. Below is the final ranking with "<--" indicating the inputs of the GPI.

    IMPORTANT DETAILS OF THE LIST

    Correlation to Consensus
Measures how well a particular ranking matches the consensus.

    Ranking Violation Percentage
The percentage of all games played such that in retrospect the lower ranked team defeated the higher ranked team. For example if team A beat team B, but ranking system X has B ranked higher than A, then that is a violation. This is basically an indication of how well a system explains past results (retrodiction). Predictive systems may have higher violation percentages.

Note: Some more complex rating systems use other factors, such as homefield advantage, to make official predictions. Therefore a game may be mislabeled a violation when only considering the rankings.

    The Final GPI is here.

A computer-only compilation of the GPI began being included in the NCAA Division I playoff tournament selection process two years ago in determining which league champions without automatic qualification should be included in the field. It was the first time the NCAA acknowledged an outside source being used in the tournament selections.
