I've always felt that making the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs was the mark of a successful season. It meant that either you had a good enough regular season to have a home game in the first round and hold serve or that you went and won a road game to advance to the final eight. For a team like Maine, picked to finish 10th in the CAA preseason poll, it's especially sweet to find themselves at this juncture.

Seventy years ago this week, the Japanese navy unleashed one of the most brazen and surprise attacks in the history of modern warfare. The attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor came on a Sunday morning. The timing of the offensive was perfect because it caught the tropical outpost at a time when it's defenses were completely unprepared and the US forces were convincingly routed.

I usually like to kick these pieces off with an interesting anecdote or reference, but after a twelve week regular season and another week of basically play-in games, it's time to get serious, FCS-style. Luckily for CAA fans, we've got five games to focus on this week. Even better, they're in some of the classic and/or far flung outposts of the FCS universe.

We’re all familiar with “Four score and seven years ago”, the first phrase of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. But have you ever heard the word score used anywhere else to describe a group of twenty? I haven’t, but on Sunday morning the FCS selection committee gave us a score of teams to fill out the playoff bracket.

I never thought I'd reference the campy 1986 Steve Gutenberg/Ally Sheedy film "Short Circuit", but the tag line was running through my head as the day developed across FCS nation. Heading into the final Saturday of the season, there was a possible scenario for only three CAA teams to make the playoff field. However...

With apologies to fellow CSN columnist Kent Schmidt, the title of the column has nothing to do with the conferences he covers. Horace Greeley was a famous 19th century American author and is credited with coming up with the phrase that was best used to sum up the concept of Manifest Destiny, that era’s version of American exceptionalism. His phrase, “Go west, young man”, was a message to the country’s young people to get out of the city and grow with the rest of the country.

The term round robin dates back to France in the 1700s when it was a kind of petition where the participants signed their names in a circle. The purpose of the tactic was that it made it impossible to tell who the leaders of the group were and it helped deter retribution against them. Strangely, something originally intending to prohibit identification is now used for the opposite purpose. In competitions in numerous sports, the round robin is the most common format when trying to identify winners when there are numerous teams.

New Normal is a phrase that’s used often these days. Many times you hear it to describe the current economy but it’s just an easy shorthand for any kind of change. I used it when my first daughter was born and again after the second. But after this past weekend, I’m most likely to use it when talking about the weather.

You could not blame fans walking out of Foreman Field last Saturday if they were looking around for movie cameras. Just minutes earlier, the ODU Monarchs were poised for a huge CAA win, but only minutes later they had been defeated by Towson after a series of events that only a Hollywood screenwriter could find plausible.

With six weeks gone of a 12 week season, it’s a natural time to take stock of what we’ve seen so far in the CAA. As usual, we've seen surprises and disappointments, but more than anything we're getting a feel for each team. The results from last week gave us a peek at the destiny of each squad and a look ahead at how the CAA title chase may shape up. ...

Two hundred and thirty years later, the Monarchs finally got even. Maybe King George V couldn't win on the road. Maybe he needed a tougher and more mobile defensive front. Maybe he needed better reserves like Taylor Heineke. Maybe Bobby Wilder was a better choice than Lord Cornwallis. Whatever the analysis, in the first Colonial rematch of the original colonial clash, the Monarchs finally beat the Minutemen.
