  • Sam Houston State Tops the Final 2011 Regular Season Gridiron Power Index (GPI)

Unbeaten Sam Houston State edged into the top spot of the Gridiron Power Index (GPI) with the entire top four separated by a single point in this final ranking of the 2011 regular season. The GPI is the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection.

The Colonial Athletic Association has six teams in the top 25; the Missouri Valley Football and Southern Conferences have five teams each; the Big Sky Conference has three; the Southland and the Great West Conferences have two each; and the Ivy and Patriot Leagues each have one. (Games through 11/20/11)

As conference average rankings the Missouri Valley Football Conference moved into the #1 slot, overtaking the Southern Conference.

The greatest movement this week saw Youngstown State moving down five places and Harvard rising five. Three new schools entered the top 25 in Cal Poly, Southern Utah and Eastern Washington while Portland State, Samford and South Dakota departed. The Final 2011 GPI will be released after the championships once all the college football games have been played, in January 2012.

The NCAA selection document states: "For those conferences that qualify for automatic qualification but do not receive it, a guaranteed at-large position shall be awarded in any year in which its conference champion team meets all of the following conditions:
    a. Team wins a minimum of eight Division I games during the season;
    b. Team wins a minimum of two non-conference games against Division I teams representing a conference that has earned an automatic qualification in that year; and
    c. Team finishes the season ranked 20 or higher in an average of the last regular season media, coaches and/or computer polls (which will be determined by the committee on an annual basis). For 2011, the media poll will be the Sports Network Poll, the coaches poll will be the FCS Coaches poll and the computer poll will be a variation of the Gridiron Power Index – using only the following computer rankings: The Massey Ratings, Wolfe Rankings, Ashburn Rankings, Self Rankings and the Laz Index."

This year only Harvard qualified under the modified GPI. The Ivy League does not allow its teams to participate in the tournament.

The Final GPI (regular and modified) indicated the following eligible at-large selections for the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships:
    Northern Iowa
    Wofford
    Appalachian State
    New Hampshire
    Maine
    Central Arkansas
    Montana State
    Old Dominion
    James Madison
    Illinois State

The selection committee chose all of them except they chose #33 Eastern Kentucky over #14/19 Illinois State.
