  • History of FCS (I-AA) vs. FBS (I-A)

Every year Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams play Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) squads. Most often the games result in a nice payday for the FCS school and victory for the FBS one. But FCS wins do occur and here we examine the records current and former FCS and FBS schools have against each other.

Important Notes on the Classification of FBS and FCS Schools

In 1978, the NCAA split Division I football into two levels. The I-A level, which is now known as the FBS, and the I-AA level which is now known as the FCS.

All of the records below go back to that split in 1978. The only games counted were the ones where a then FBS school played a then FCS school.

Schools that were probationary FBS/I-A members were counted as full FBS members, and probationary FCS/I-AA members were counted as full FCS members.

FBS (I-A) Schools vs. FCS (I-AA) Schools

Remember: The only games counted were the ones where a then FBS school played a then FCS school (i.e. Massachusetts’ games against the FCS level when they were in the FCS weren’t counted).

    Includes former FBS/I-A members.
