  • College Sporting News National All Stars 9/17/2012

Deonte Williams of Cal Poly, Taylor Heinicke of Old Dominion, Treavor Scales of Harvard, Colton Underwood of Illinois State, Dan Sullivan of Monmouth and Carson Smith of The Citadel have been selected as the College Sporting News All-Stars for the week ending September 16, 2012 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their school, position, height, weight, class and hometown.

Deonte Williams, Cal Poly, Runningback, 5-10, 200, Senior, Oakland, CA

Williams ran for 155 of his 187 yards in the first quarter in the Mustang’s 24-22 upset of Wyoming (FBS). On the fourth play of the game, Williams busted loose for a 65-yard score to put the Mustangs ahead 7-0. On the Mustangs’ second drive, Williams had a 74-yard run down the right sideline to set up his squad’s second touchdown. Williams also had one catch for 3 yards. He averaged 9.8 yards per carry and leads the Big Sky Conference in rushing with 296 yards, averaging 148 yards per game.

Taylor Heinicke, Old Dominion, Quarterback, 6-1, 195, Sophomore, Atlanta, GA

Heinicke racked up 486 passing yards and seven touchdowns on a 21-of-29 performance in a 70-14 victory against Campbell. The quarterback's passing yards were the 10th-highest total in CAA Football history, while his seven TD-passes were one shy from equaling the league mark last done in 2004. Heinicke started the scoring on a 13-yard run and threw touchdown passes for the 28 point lead, then added an 11-yard strike before the half. He also ran the ball five times for 36 yards and a touchdown

Treavor Scales, Harvard, Runningback, 5-10, 195, Senior, Stone Mountain, GA

Scales had a big day in the Crimson opener against defending Pioneer League champion San Diego with 19 carries for a career-high 173 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-13 victory. Scales averaged 9.1 yards per carry and with Harvard clinging to the lead late in the fourth quarter, he took a handoff and beat all defenders with a 66-yard rush for a score.

Colton Underwood, Illinois State, Defensive End, 6-4, 255, Junior, Washington, IL

Underwood had a career day for the Redbirds in their 54-51 double overtime victory over Eastern Illinois. He set new career-highs with 13 tackles, three sacks and 3.5 tackles-for-loss against the Panthers. In a game featuring high-powered qurterbacks, Underwood notched a pair of quarterback hurries, as the Redbirds totaled five sacks and eight TFLs overall.

Dan Sullivan, Monmouth, Linebacker, 6-2, 235, Senior, Manasquan, NJ

Sullivan made 4.5 tackles for a loss, including 3.5 quarterback sacks, during Monmouth’s 38-17 victory over Outer Bridge rival Wagner. He recorded a team-high nine tackles (seven solo) and was also credited with a forced fumble and two quarterback hurries. He sacked Nick Doscher on Wagner’s first play from scrimmage, sending the Seahawks on their way to a 3-and-out. Sullivan later derailed three consecutive Wagner drives with a trio of solo sacks in the second quarter. The third sack forced a fumble at Wagner’s 23-yard line and gave Monmouth a last-second chance to add to its 28-10 lead right before halftime.

Carson Smith, The Citadel, Linebacker, 6-2, 225, Sophomore, Simpsonville, SC

Linebacker Carson Smith led The Citadel's defensive effort its second straight win over a Top 10 team, defeating Appalachian State 52-28. The sophomore scooped up a blocked punt and returned it eight yards to the end zone to give the Bulldogs a 31-0 lead with 6:16 left in the second quarter. Later in the quarter, he picked off a pass and returned it 11 yards. Smith added seven tackles in the contest and the Bulldogs are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time since winning their second and most recent SoCon title in 1992. The Citadel last defeated two ranked teams in a season in 2003 and last knocked off two Top 10 teams in the same season in 1991.
