Brian Bell, Sam Houston State, Quarterback, 6-2, 175, Junior, China Spring, TX
Bell picked up 22nd career victory as starting quarterback for Sam Houston, directing his offense to 396 total yards in a 51-43 win over rival Stephen F. Austin in the Battle of the Piney Woods at Reliant Stadium. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 168 yards and totaled 69 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Bell passed for scores of 5, 31 and 30 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 9 yards. He accounted for 237 yards of total offense.
Josh Woodrum, Liberty, Quarterback, 6-3, 210, Freshman, Roanoke, VA
Woodrum was 25-of-31 passing (80.6 percent) for a career-high 373 yards and three touchdowns in leading Liberty to 42-35 come-from-behind win in the Flames’ Big South opener against Gardner-Webb. With Liberty trailing 28-10 early in the third quarter, he threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 11 points. In the fourth quarter down by seven points, Woodrum completed a 45-yard scoring strike to tie the game at 35-35, and tossed the game winning TD pass with 5:11 to play. He was 14-of-16 passing for 238 yards and three scores in the second half. The 373 passing yards marked the 12th highest single-game passing performance in program history.
Nick Thrasher, Tennessee State, Linebacker, 6-2, 240, Sophomore, Morrow, GA
Thrasher had a game-high 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, and a key sack as Tennessee State improved to 6-0 on the season with a 23-20 come-from-behind victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. With the Tigers trailing by four points late in the fourth quarter, Thrasher sacked EKU quarterback T.J. Pryor on a 3rd and 6 at the TSU 29-yard line and the Colonels were unable to convert on fourth down, setting up TSU for the game-winning drive (which covered 68 yards on 13 plays).
Mike Catapano, Princeton, Defensive End, 6-4, 270, Senior, Bayville, NY
Continuing his brilliant start to the season, Catapano grabbed eight tackles including three for a loss plus 2.5 sacks in the Tigers’ 35-14 win at Lafayette. Catapano anchored a Princeton defense that held Lafayette to only 192 offensive yards and off the scoreboard until the Leopards put together two scoring drives (of 150 yards total) late in the game.
Michael Martin, Linebacker, Fordham, 5-11, 215, Senior, Arlington, TX
Martin recorded a career-high 18 tackles with 0.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in Fordham’s 38-31 win over Georgetown on Saturday. He had a stop as part of a goal line stand as the Rams prevented the Hoyas from tying the score late in the fourth quarter. Martin is 14th in the country with 10.83 tackles per game for the year, and stands 13th among all active FCS players with 272 career tackles.
