HBCU Major Division Classic Game of Week
#6 North Carolina Central (6-3, 5-1) at Florida A&M (3-6, 3-3)
Tallahassee, FL, Bragg Memorial Stadium
–MEAC– Prince Hall Shriners, 2:00pmCT
The struggling Rattlers of Florida A&M host No. North Carolina Central University in the Prince Hall Shriners Foundation Diabetes Classic this Saturday. The Eagles of North Carolina Central look to win out and hope that Bethune-Cookman can slip up to give them a shot at the 2012 MEAC Championship. The Eagles won their sixth game of the season last week on a blocked field goal to defeat the Hornets of Delaware State University in the second overtime, 23-20. Eagle DB, Michael Cromartie blocked the 34-yard field goal attempt which sealed the victory for Delaware State. Cromartie also had a team-high 12 tackles. After starting the season 2-0 in conference play, it has been all down-hill ever since for the Florida A&M Rattlers. Florida A&M University, losers of four of their last five, was defeated by North Carolina A&T University, 16-3. The Rattlers were held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since 1938. Although the records speak a different volume, Florida A&M actually has an advantage in this matchup if they play to their strength of throwing the football. Florida A&M has the second best passing offense in the MEAC while North Carolina Central is ranked eighth against the pass. In their last matchup Florida A&M defeated the Eagles 31-10.
*** Game Outcome: Florida A&M (35-17)
HBCU Major Division Game of Week
#7 Howard (6-3, 5-2) at Georgia Southern (HWCU) (7-2, 6-2)
Statesboro, GA, Paulson Stadium
MEAC / SoCon – 1:00pmCT
The No. 7 Howard University Bison travel to Statesboro to take on the Southern Conference 1first place Georgia Southern Eagles this Saturday. Howard, currently in third place in the MEAC standings. The Bison defeated Hampton, 20-10, last Saturday. Bison RB, Terrance Lefall rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries to lead Howard to its sixth victory of the season. The Georgia Southern Eagles are looking to get back on the winning track after dropping their last game as they were defeated by Appalachian State, 31-28. The loss snapped Georgia Southern’s six-game winning streak which stretched back from late September. This is the first time these two teams are squaring off against each other. When looking at this matchup all signs point to Georgia Southern as having the big advantage. The Eagles have an effective rushing attack but the Bison have a hard time stopping it. Georgia Southern’s defense against the pass lacks strength, but Howard’s passing game is atrocious ranking last in their conference.
*** Game Outcome: Georgia Southern (45-10)
MEAC Game of Week
South Carolina State (4-5, 3-3) at #10 North Carolina A&T State (5-4, 3-3)
Greensboro, NC, Aggie Stadium
–MEAC– 12:30pmCT
The Bulldogs of South Carolina State travel to Greensboro to face-off with the Aggies of North Carolina A&T State in a true dog fight this Saturday. The Aggies won their second in a row and snapped a nine-game losing streak after beating the Rattlers of Florida A&M, 16-3, last week. Aggie K, Zach Cimaglia kicked three field goals: 33, 30 and 27 yards to lead the scoring for North Carolina A&T State. South Carolina State has their own winning streak brewing, defeating Howard in their last contest, 41-23. Bulldog QB, Richard Cue had a career day completing 24 passes for 366 yards and throwing four touchdown passes. Cue’s highlight of the game came on a 97-yard scoring pass completed to Bulldog WR, Tyler McDonald. This will definitely be an exciting matchup as it showcases two quarterbacks that can move the ball through the air. South Carolina State’s running game will have to step up to help carry the load this week as their passing game’s effectiveness may be limited when they meet a stingy pass defense in North Carolina A&T. North Carolina A&T State pass defense ranks second in the MEAC. In their last matchup, South Carolina State defeated North Carolina A&T State, 30-22.
*** Game Outcome: North Carolina A&T State (28-27)
SWAC Game of Week
#5 Alabama A&M (7-2, 6-2) at #8 Jackson State (5-4, 5-2)
Jackson, MS, Veterans Memorial Stadium
–SWAC– 4:00pmCT
With the 2012 season winding down, No. 5 Alabama A&M University attempts to win their last conference game of the season and do their part to represent the Eastern Division in the SWAC Championship Game as they take on No. 8 Jackson State University. The Bulldogs won an important game last week against the Jaguars of Southern University, 24-23 which for now is keeping Alabama A&M in the hunt of the conference championship as they are tied in SWAC East division standings for first place with Alabama State. Bulldogs K, Chance Wilson kicked the game-winning extra point in overtime which nailed the victory for A&M. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs. Jackson State rolls into this matchup feeling real confident after they annihilated Grambling State University, 53-17 last Saturday to a snap a 5-game losing streak to the Tigers. Blue Bengals QB, Clayton Moore completed 12 of his 18 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns in the convincing win. Jackson State’s defense also came to play only allowing Grambling to rush for five yards the entire game, which are the fewest amounts of yards the Blue Bengals’ have allowed in school history. This is a must win for the Bulldogs to possibly punch a ticket to the SWAC championship game, but not only must the Bulldogs win, they need Alabama State to lose their last conference game as well due to the Hornets holding the tie-breaker from a head-to-head win against Alabama A&M. While a Jackson State win would give them control of their own destiny to win the Eastern Division based on their win over Alabama State this season. Jackson State won the last meeting between these two teams, 34-6.
*** Game Outcome: Alabama A&M (21-17)
