The GPI has been used ever since the NCAA began utilizing outside methods in 2008.
The GPI is used specifically for this purpose of evaluating the champion of a conference that does not receive automatic qualification into the championship (i.e., Pioneer Football League).
More specifically, the average ranking of such a team in a group of polls will be used by the committee to determine whether or not that team shall be selected for participating in the championship on an at-large basis. In the past the committee has also used the media and coaches opinion polls in addition to the GPI.
CSN will provide our weekly GPI rankings of the FCS teams and on the final weekend – championship selection weekend – the committee will have them on Sunday morning.
CSN began producing the GPI in our inaugural year, 2001, indicating the worthiness of the playoff selections.
