  • College Sporting News National All Stars 9/2/2013

Vernon Adams of Eastern Washington, Terrance West of Towson, Alex McNulty of Eastern Illinois and Colton Cook of Southern Utah have been selected as the College Sporting News All-Stars for the week ending September 1, 2013 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their position, school, class, height, weight and hometown.

Vernon Adams, Quarterback, Eastern Washington, Sophomore, 6-0, 190, Pasadena, CA

Adams finished with 518 yards of total offense as Eastern Washington registered maybe the biggest victory in school history with a 49-46 win at FBS 25th-ranked Oregon State. Adams had 411 yards and four touchdowns on 23-of-30 passing, and added 107 yards and two TDs on the ground. On EWU’s first possession of the second half, Adams went down with cramps and left the game and OSU was able to regain the lead. Once Adams returned, however, the Eagles responded with a 69-yard scoring drive, with Adams scrambling for a 19-yard touchdown. A 2-yard run by Adams with 18 seconds to play were the winning points. This is the first time EWU has defeated a current member of the Pac-12 Conference. EWU scored points on all nine drives that Adams played.

Terrance West, Runningback, Towson, Junior, 5-11, 223, Baltimore, MD

West ran for 156 yards, two touchdowns and the Tigers won for the first time against an FBS opponent, upsetting Connecticut 33-18. West carried the ball a career-high 36 times and broke the 100-yard mark for the 12th time in his career. His two fourth-quarter scores put the game away. He put the finishing touches on the upset, scoring from 5 yards out with 16 seconds left in the game. The 15-point margin of victory is the third-largest win by a FCS team against a BCS-AQ team since 2000.

Alex McNulty, Defensive Back, Eastern Illinois, RS Senior, 5-10, 189, Bolingbrook, IL

The senior who has played in every game since he came to Eastern Illinois as a freshman played a big role in the Panther's 40-19 win at FBS San Diego State. He notched two interceptions which he returned for 51 yards, one for 30 yards and the other for 21. He also added five tackles, two solo, including one for a seven yard loss plus 2 pass breakups. The first interception came in the first quarter and McNulty returned it 21 yards to the SDSU 35, leading to a 13-13 game tying EIU score. The second came in the 4th quarter with EIU nursing a 33-19 lead. McNulty grabbed a fourth down attempt by SDSU at the EIU 21 and returned it into SDSU territory, leading to the clinching EIU score which sealed the game at 40-19. EIU's defense limited San Diego State to only 122 yards rushing and four field goals after a first quarter TD run.

Colton Cook, Kicker, Southern Utah, Senior, 5-8, 185, Centerville, UT

Left-footed Cook kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to lift Southern Utah to a 22-21 come-back win over FBS South Alabama despite being roughed on the play.. SUU scored first with a 33-yard Cook field goal, then went up 13-7 on a 37-yard Cook field goal early in the fourth period. He also added an extra point and finished with 10 points.
