Jackson State makes a statement with key win over Alabama State:
The Aggies of N. C. A&T make a bigger statement beating the Mountaineers
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats enter into week three as the No. 1 ranked team after a dominating home win against the Virginia Union Panthers, 66-7. But, the Wildcats margin between the No. 2 North Carolina A&T Aggies has narrowed. Bethune-Cookman earned 117 points losing two first-place votes, receiving seven. The Aggies received five first-place votes with 96 points after an impressive road win against the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 24-21. The Mountaineers are in their first season transitioning to FBS. The Wildcats will face the Florida International Golden Panthers of the FBS Conference USA this weekend. The second ranked Aggies will host the Elon Phoenix.
The Tennessee State Tigers remain ranked third with 92 points. The No. 3 Tennessee State will face the No. 4 Jackson State Tigers in the 24th Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN. The Jackson State Tigers hold the fourth spot with 87 points. The game will be televised on Fox SportsSouth at 6:00pm CT. Both teams are coming off of solid victories. The Blue Bengals of Tennessee State went on the road and defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers, 27-7, in Tallahassee, FL. While, the Jackson State Tigers defeated the No. 9 Alabama State Hornets, 30-23. The Hornets will travel to Arkansas to face the fifth ranked Golden Lions in a crucial SWAC contest.
The Golden Lions round out the top five with 65 points. The No. 5 Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions slid down one spot after losing a game to the national ranked McNeese State Cowboys of the Southland Conference, 58-14.
The No. 6 South Carolina State Bulldogs and No. 7 Prairie View A&M Panthers both had road losses to FBS programs. The Bulldogs lost to the national ranked Clemson Tigers (top five) of the ACC, 52-13, while the Panthers were formative opponents losing the Texas State Bobcats of the Sun Belt Conference, 28-3. The South Carolina State Bulldogs host the No. 10 Alabama A&M Bulldogs in a MEAC / SWAC aerial dog fight and grudge match on defensive. The Alabama A&M Bulldogs are coming off of a lost to the No. 1 Mid-Major ranked Tuskegee Golden Tigers of the Southern Intercollegiate Conference (SIAC), 23-7.
The No. 8 Howard Bison enter into the Top 10 poll rankings for the first time this season after defeating the No. 6 Mid-Major ranked Morehouse Maroon Tigers of the SIAC in the 3rd AT&T Nation’s Football Classic, 27-16. The Bison will travel to Old Dominion Monarchs, whom are in their first year transitioning to the FBS level as a member of Conference USA. Falling out of the top 10 poll rankings this week are the Florida A&M Rattlers from the ninth position.
