THE WILDCATS WIN CONFERENCE OPENER, BULLDOGS OVER THE AGGIES: Jackson State, Alabama State, Prairie View A&M continue to win in the SWAC
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (4-1. 1-0) remain No. 1 after coming from behind to defeat the Delaware State Hornets (1-4, 1-1), 21-7. The Wildcats received six first-place votes with 103 points in week six. The Wildcats will head back on the road, this week to the nation’s capital to face the Howard Bison (1-4, 0-2).
The new No. 2 Tennessee State Tigers, with 101 points with four first-place votes, soundly defeated the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks, 40-16 . The Tigers (4-1, 2-0) will travel to Alabama to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (5-1, 1-1) in OVC action.
The No. 3 South Carolina State Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0) moved up in the poll one spot after a tough, 29-24, conference victory over the No. 4 North Carolina A&T Aggies (3-1, 1-1) in the Atlanta Football Classic. The Bulldogs earned two first-place votes and 95 points this week and will face their second top-ten matchup in consecutive weeks. The fourth ranked Aggies finished with 79 points in the poll rankings and will travel to face the winless Hampton Pirates (0-5, 0-1). The third ranked Bulldogs will travel to face the No. 9 North Carolina Central Eagles (3-2, 1-0) this week.
The fifth ranked Jackson State Tigers complete the top five teams in the 2013 HBCU Major Division Poll Rankings in week six. The Tigers (4-2, 4-0) had to come from behind in the second half to defeat, 42-33, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions (0-5, 0-3). The Tigers will travel to the Delta to face an in-state foe, in the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils (1-4, 1-2). The Delta Devils are coming off of their first win of the season.
The No. 6 Alabama State Hornets (4-2, 4-1), No. 7 Prairie View A&M Panthers (4-2, 3-1), and the No. 8 Alcorn State Braves (4-2, 2-1) are all coming off of dominating performances. The Hornets cruised, 34-2, past the winless Texas Southern Tigers (0-5, 0-4), while the Panthers crushed, 31-3, the winless Grambling State Tigers (0-6, 0-3). This will set up a top ten show down between the seventh ranked Panthers traveling to Montgomery to face the sixth ranked Hornets. The Braves pounded the Warner Southern Royals, 57-0 in a non-conference contest. The Braves will host Grambling this week.
The No. 10 Southern Jaguars (2-3, 2-1) had an open date. The Jaguars will face the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-4, 2-2).
There were no teams falling out of the top 10 poll rankings this week and there were not any teams earning votes in the top 10 poll rankings in week six.
