  • College Sporting News National All Stars 10/14/2013

John Robertson of Villanova, Kurt Hess of Youngstown State, Marice Sutton of Southeastern Louisiana, Quinn Backus of Coastal Carolina and Torrance Williams of Sam Houston State have been selected as the College Sporting News All-Stars for the week ending October 13, 2013 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision.

Each of the honorees are listed here with their achievements and their position, school, class, height, weight and hometown.

John Robertson, Quarterback, Villanova, Sophomore, 6-1, 215, Paramus, NJ

Robertson was instrumental in Villanova's 45-35 victory over Towson. He piled up 332 total yards in the win, opening the game with 17 straight completions and finishing 17-of-18 for 182 yards and two touchdowns through the air to go with 150 yards and three scores on a career-best 32 carries -- the most by a Wildcat since 2007. Robertson's effort marked his sixth-career 100-yard rushing game and his second-ever outing with three rushing touchdowns.

Kurt Hess, Quarterback, Youngstown State, Senior, 6-3, 230, Dayton, OH

Hess threw for a career-high 311 yards and four touchdowns in the Penguins’ 59-21 win over Illinois State. He also added a rushing score in the win. Hess was 17-of-21 on the night in the win over the Redbirds. Hess had touchdown passes of 67, 40, 10 and two yards in the win. He also added a 16-yard rush in the third quarter. It was the sixth time in his career that Hess threw at least four touchdown passes in a game. It was the second time in his career that he threw for more than 300 yards and it was his 22nd career 200-yard plus passing game, a school mark.

Marice Sutton, Defensive Back, Southeastern Louisiana, Junior, 5-10, 180, New Orleans, LA

Sutton recorded two interceptions totaling 45 yards in the 56-14 conference-opening victory over Stephen F. Austin. He returned an interception for a touchdown for the second consecutive game, tying the school’s season and career records for interception returns for a touchdown. Sutton leads the team with three interceptions. The junior was part of a Lion defense that held SFA, which entered the game as the top-ranked passing offense and second-ranked total offense in the FCS, to 139 passing yards and 315 total yards.

Quinn Backus, Linebacker, Coastal Carolina, Junior, 5-10, 215, Greenwood, SC

In Coastal’s 42-7 win over Gardner-Webb, Backus tallied 11 tackles (five solo, six assisted) with an assisted tackle-for-loss, an interception return for a touchdown and two additional pass break-ups in leading the Chanticleer defense. His pick-six was a 73-yard return that gave Coastal a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, while eight of his stops came in the second half as CCU shutout Gardner-Webb the final 30 minutes. Backus also assisted on a one-yard tackle-for-loss on a third-and-goal situation. This is the second national all-star award for Backus this season.

Torrance Williams, Return Specialist/Wide Receiver, Sam Houston State, Senior, 5-8, 170, Waco, TX

Williams helped Sam Houston win the field possession battle with five punt returns for 138 yards in a 14-3 victory over Lamar. He averaged 27.4 yards per return, including a long of 53 yards. After his fifth long return, the Cardinals booted their final three punts out-of-bounds. He also caught two passes for 17 yards and rushed for 18 more to total 173 all-purpose yards. Williams leads the Southland in punt returns this year (16 for 358) and his 22.4 return average ranks second nationally in the FCS.
