VILLANOVA — What a difference two years makes for the Villanova-James Madison rivalry. The last time JMU showed up on the Mainline was one of the worst weather days anyone from either school could remember.
A torrential rain poured on Villanova Stadium, with heavy winds sending the moisture sideways at times. In a matchup betweeen two of the top teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, game plans were quickly thrown out the window as the contest became a siege battle.
Villanova was in the process of finishing off a 19-16 victory when JMU quarterback Rodney Landers fired a Hail Mary pass on the final play of the game that bounced off VU linebacker Osaya Osunde and back into the arms of Duke receiver Bosco Williams for a stunning, game-winning touchdown that made it 23-19 in JMU's favor.
On this Saturday, however, you couldn't ask for a better homecoming day. Sun-splashed weather greeted the guests and the players alike.
With both Villanova and James Madison trying to stay in the thick of the Colonial Athletic Association race on this shake-out Saturday, at least weather won't be the deciding factor.
Injuries, however, will play a big role.
Villanova still has all-everything offensive performer Matt Szczur on the sidelines with a high ankle sprain and JMU is depleted on the defensive line.
Still, we should be in for a great game in this classic FCS series.
