North Dakota State @ Eastern Washington

I am getting ready for the West battle of the Missouri Valley vs. the Big Sky last remaining playoff participants. I dubbed this the West championship game in my column this week and likely the winner of this game will play Villanova--in Cheney if EWU wins since they are a seed--No. 5. Villanova is leading #1 seed Appalachian State 42-24 at this point with just under 8:00 left in the fourth quarter. It would be unclear if NDSU or Villanova would host their clash if they would both win but one might assume that the 19,000 filled Fargodome would be hard to overlook if it is a meeting of two unseeded teams.

This game should be a battle of defenses and ground games, although Bo Levi Mitchell does have the better of the throwing matchups. D.J. McNorton of NDSU and Taiwan Jones of EWU should provide the running game.

The red turfed Roos Field is actually relatively warm today with temperatures around the freezing mark or slightly higher. The forecast still is calling for snow showers.

I think this will be a closely fought defensive game with the winner getting the turnover margin.

    Well before this one gets started we know that the winner of this game will play Villanova. The defending national champions defeated App State in Boone 42-24.

    Eastern Washington will get the ball first. NDSU is kicking off.

    Taiwan Jones returns it out to the 36 yard line.

    Jones gets a big run of 62 yard run on a 2nd & 10 play. Its 1st and goal Eagles at the NDSU 2.

    On a 3rd and goal from the 1, EWU scores on a Mitchell pass to Zach Gehring. We are at 7-0 EWU with 13:05 left in the 1st qtr.

    EWU kickoffs and Justin Howard returns out to the EWU 27.

    NDSU goes three and out. Their punt sends EWU back to the 20 yard line.

    We get our first video replay. On a 3rd down play, the ruling on the field was a catch by the Eagles but it appears as if the ball hit the ground.

    They are saying the play stands as called. It is now 1st & 10 for the Eagles at their own 31.

    Jones gets another long run--69 yards for a score on the ensuing play. It is 14-0 EWU with 9:05 left in the 1st qtr.

    Jones is cutting up the highly ranked Bison defense right now. Already over 120 yards on the day with a score.

    EWU's kickoff is returned out to their 24.

    The Bison punt is not returned. The Eagles will start at their own 26.

    EWU goes three and out. The Eagles punt sends the Bison back to the 18 but their is a foul on the play--running into the kicker to give the Eagles a first down.

    Jones fumbles the ball a the 28 yard line but the Eagles recover it. NDSU also gets a personal foul blow to the helmet call on Jemison on play. It is 1st & 10 for EWU at their own 43

    NDSU's defense overcomes the two penalaties to force a punt by the Eagles. The punt is fair caught at their own 24.

    NDSU is driving--currently they are at the Eagle 24 as we end the 1st qtr. NDSU has a 3rd and 5 as we start the 2nd qtr.

    The third down play goes incomplete from qb Brock Jensen. Ryan Jastram hits a 41 yard field goal to put the Bison on the board. It is EWU 14 NDSU 3 with 14:51 left in the 1st half.
