I am getting ready for the West battle of the Missouri Valley vs. the Big Sky last remaining playoff participants. I dubbed this the West championship game in my column this week and likely the winner of this game will play Villanova--in Cheney if EWU wins since they are a seed--No. 5. Villanova is leading #1 seed Appalachian State 42-24 at this point with just under 8:00 left in the fourth quarter. It would be unclear if NDSU or Villanova would host their clash if they would both win but one might assume that the 19,000 filled Fargodome would be hard to overlook if it is a meeting of two unseeded teams.

This game should be a battle of defenses and ground games, although Bo Levi Mitchell does have the better of the throwing matchups. D.J. McNorton of NDSU and Taiwan Jones of EWU should provide the running game.

The red turfed Roos Field is actually relatively warm today with temperatures around the freezing mark or slightly higher. The forecast still is calling for snow showers.

I think this will be a closely fought defensive game with the winner getting the turnover margin.

    Jones breaks off another big run for 28 yards following an intial first down for the Eagles. It is 1st & 10 at the NDSU 30 currently.

    EWU's Brandon Kaufman drops a pass from Mitchell in the endzone on a pass that was perfect. NDSU blocks the Eagle field goal attempt and will take over after a return at the Eagles 49.

    NDSU scores on a 1 yard run by McNorton on a drive that NDSU mixed some running and passing. EWU 14 NDSU 10 with 9:29 left in the 1st half.

    NDSU kicks off with EWU returning to their own 21.

    EWU goes three and out. The Bison defense has made the changes to stop Jones. The Eagle punt is downed at the NDSU 32.

    NDSU goes three & out with Renard Williams making a big sack on first down. The punt goes out of bounds at the EWU 38. We have 6:05 left in the half.

    Jones makes an outstanding move to get another big game. He is nearing the 200 mark already in the 1st half. Mitchell also showing some running ability on the following play. EWU is driving, currently at the NDSU 22.

    NDSU holds EWU at the 20. Mike Jarrett is on for a 36 yard field goal and it is good. It is EWU 17 NDSU 10 with 2:33 left in the half.

    NDSU returns the ensuing kickoff out to their own 26.

    NDSU driving inside the EWU 20 yard line--literally in the red zone. But is currently 3rd & 10 with :14.

    Jesse Hoffmann picks off Jensen on a one-on-one play. We will go to the halftime break with EWU leading 17 - 10.

    At the half, Jones has 203 yards on the ground on just 12 carries with a TD for EWU. McNorton got 44 yards with a TD for NDSU.

    There is a little snow starting to fall in Cheney now.

    My keys, NDSU turned over the ball once when they could have gotten a field goal before the half. Although the block field goal was almost like a turnovers so we probably are about even. NDSU gets the ball to begin the 2nd half.

    Mike Siegers returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown. It is a 94 yard return for the score. We are now tied early in the 3rd qtr. EWU 17 NDSU 17 with 14:44 left in the 3rd.

    EWU returns the favor with Jesse Hoffmann returning the next kickoff 88 yards to put the Eagles up by a touchdown. He also had an unsportsmanlike penatly that will be placed on the next kickoff. EWU 24 NDSU 17 with 14:34.

    EWU needs to kickoff from their 15 following the penalty. EWU kicks away from Siegers but Howard returns it to the NDSU 46 so the Bison will have good field possession.

    NDSU goes three and out. EWU kneels down with it at their own 17.

    EWU fumbles the ball on a wide receiver screen. NDSU recovers at the EWU 21. This play will also be reviewed by the TV review officials.
