Villanova @ Eastern Washington

I am getting ready for this game. First off, the weather looks pretty good in Cheney for a mid-December night with the temps right at the freezing mark. Matt Szcur and Villanova just knocked off top seeded Appalachian State last weekand now will look to knock off the top ranked (at least in one poll) Eastern Washington. The Eagles are the fifth seed.

The Eagles will need to win without All-American Taiwan Jones after breaking his foot in the OT win over NDSU last week.

We shall see how that plays out.

I am looking for a closer game than most expect but without Jones, I would think the Wildcats have the advantage.

Eastern Washington is looking for their first trip to the championship game but with a win, their conference of the Big Sky would be going to the game for the third straight year. Montana went and lost the last two title contests.

We shall see though on the red turf in the Inferno.

    Villanova will receive the opening kickoff.

    And Angelo Babbaro takes that opening kickoff for a score. Vilanova is up 7 - 0 with 14:49 left in the first qtr. His return was 86 yards for the score.

    Last week, EWU gave up a kickoff return in the opening kickoff. They get a good return and Eagle qb Bo Levi Mitchell leads the Eagles down to tie the game at 7 - 7. He found Nichalos Edwards from 31 yards out to get the passing score. We have 12:36 left in the opening frame.

    This might be a high scoring affair. We shall see if the Eagles defense does on the next drive as the Eagles pooch kicks to the VU 39.

    VU qb Chris Whitney fumbles the opening play from scrimmage for the Wildcats and the Eagles have it now at the VU 37.

    A chop block foul on the Eagles sends them back after the opening play. It will be 1st & 25 for the Eagles now.

    Mitchell finds Edwards again on a 2nd down play to set up a 3rd & 1.

    The Eagles get another first down and now are at the VU 13, 1 & 10.

    Another penalty with an illegal formation sends EWU back five yards.

    After a run by Mario Brown and another catch by Edwards, EWU is at 3rd & 6.

    Brandon Kaufman makes the catch on the 3rd down play but comes up short. A 24-yard FG by Mike Jarrett puts the Eagles up 10 - 7 with 7:30 left in the 1st qtr.

    EWU with a good kickoff to the endzone. Villanova downs it so it will be 1 & 10 at the 20 for the Wildcats.

    VU is now at a 3rd & 1 after two running plays.

    Aaron Ball with the carry and gets enough yards for the first down but we will have our first replay of the game as it appears as if he was losing control of the ball when he was going down.

    If it proves to a be fumble, EWU recovered the loose ball.

    Just seeing the replays, I think this will be EWU ball.

    Officials confirm my eyes. It is Eagle ball with 6:04 left. 1st & 10 EWU at the VU 47

    So far, so good without Jones at the running back spot. Brown for nine on the first play after the fumble.

    A false start penalty sends the Eagles back 5.
