Villanova @ Eastern Washington

I am getting ready for this game. First off, the weather looks pretty good in Cheney for a mid-December night with the temps right at the freezing mark. Matt Szcur and Villanova just knocked off top seeded Appalachian State last weekand now will look to knock off the top ranked (at least in one poll) Eastern Washington. The Eagles are the fifth seed.

The Eagles will need to win without All-American Taiwan Jones after breaking his foot in the OT win over NDSU last week.

We shall see how that plays out.

I am looking for a closer game than most expect but without Jones, I would think the Wildcats have the advantage.

Eastern Washington is looking for their first trip to the championship game but with a win, their conference of the Big Sky would be going to the game for the third straight year. Montana went and lost the last two title contests.

We shall see though on the red turf in the Inferno.

    VU with a 3 & 1. at the 23 and Szczur gets the 1st down. The Wilcats currently at the 22.

    Two incompletes leads to a 3rd & 10 for VU.

    Szczur gets just three on the 3rd down pass play. Mark Hamilton makes the 35 yard FG attempt to pull VU within three. EWU 20 VU 17 with 7:10 left in the 3rd qtr.

    EWU returns the KO out to their own 25.

    After getting out to near midfield, EWU is forced to punt, which goes into the endzone for a touchback. On the play before the punt, it appeared close for Brown fumbling the ball but the officials do not send this one up for replay for some reason.

    VU with a 3rd & 2 at the 28.

    Pass incomplete on 3rd down to force a three and out. The VU punt is downed at the EWU 20. A 51 yard punt changes field possession.

    76 yard reception by Brandon Kaufman on a perfect pass by Mitchell on a the 2nd play of the drive. EWU now up by 10. Eagles 27 Wildcats 17 with 2:09 left in the 3rd qtr.

    Big KO return for Villanova of 33 yard out to to the 50.

    Szczur and Ball with two big runs for the Wildcats and another pass to Reynolds. VU in scoring range already at the EWU 21.

    Norman White with a great catch on the sideline getting one foot in. 1st & goal for VU. Whitney on the qb option keeper for the touchdown. VU pulls within three with :11 left in the 3rd qtr. EWU 27 VU 24.

    EWU returns the KO to the 34.

    Mitchell gets six on a pass to Herd as we end the 3rd frame. 2nd & 4 when we start the 4th.

    This game is probably right what the Eagles wanted with Jones out. Mitchell has looked much better in this game than what he had last week (with the exception of the game tying and OT drives).

    EWU lucky with an Edwards catch on a VU tipped pass from Mitchell on the first play of the 4th but gains just one. It is 3rd & 3.

    Mitchells' pass on 3rd down goes wide so it is a three and out for the Eagles. The punt is a good one with a fair catch at the VU 15 by Szczur.

    VU fumbles by Babbaro with Tyler Washburn returning it for an Eagle touchdown. The play is under review.

    The play stands and the extra point is good. EWU extends again to a 10 point lead. Eagles 34 Wildcats 24 with 13:56 left in the game.

    Terence Thomas after giving some hits on special teams gets hit on the the KO return. VU starts, however, with good field position at their own 44.

    After an intial first down, it is now 3rd & 6 for VU and they make the 1st & 10 at the EWU 35 on a screen to Reynolds.
