The first look at the red turf of Roos Field on ESPN2 tonight and all I can say is WOW. Hopefully, I can still stand to look at the screen three hours from now as No. 1 ranked Eastern Washington hosts Villanova in the NCAA Division I Football Championship semifinals in Cheney, Wa.
EWU calls its new digs "The Inferno" and the Eagles are undefeated here this season. Temperatures are suppose to dip into the 20s, from the 5 p.m. local starting weather in the 30s. At least it isn't the snow that Eastern Washington battled through in the second half of last Saturday's 38-31 overtime win over North Dakota State.
The inferno was a good name for the way the two teams got going on this Friday night.
Angelo Babbaro returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for Villanova to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. It was the second kickoff return touchdown in four games for Babbaro, who also opened the Delaware contest with a TD and the fifth of his career.
EWU answered with a five-play, 63-yard that took 2:15 and ended with a 31-yard TD pass from QB Bo Levi Mitchell to Nicholas Edwards to tie the score.
Villanova's first play from scrimmage turned into disaster when quarterback Chris Whitney botched a handoff to Aaron that Paul Ena recovered for the Eagles.
EWU marched the ball to a first and 10 at the Wildcat 14 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first period. But an illegal formation call made it first and 15 from the VU 19.
