FCS Quarterfinals, New Hampshire @ Delaware, 12/10/2010

Newark will play host Friday night on prime-time ESPN2 to another fantastic matchup of Northeast football as well, as New Hampshire returns to Tubby Raymond Field to face off against Delaware for the first time since quarterback Ricky Santos almost singlehandedly defeated Joe Flacco and the Blue Hens in a 52-49 shootout.

Through the quirks of CAA scheduling, New Hampshire have not played in Newark since 2006, and last played in 2007.
But through the magic of the playoffs, the league matchup that wasn't meant to be in the regular season will now be a do-or-die struggle for CAA supremacy.

New Hampshire coach Sean McDonnell, a man as restrained as Keeler is outspoken, hinted that Decker might be the starter again this week. "

We'll figure that out as we go along," McDonnell said.

"Coming off a physical game against Bethune Cookman, you lose that extra day for healing for the Friday game," McDonnell added. "The only thing that helps us is that we see Delaware on tape all the time, and at this time of year you have a pretty good idea about what you want to do. We're excited to have an opportunity to play them, and on Friday night [on ESPN]."

Keeler also mentioned defense in the run-up to this Friday's game.

"If you look at New Hampshire, they have 33 sacks," Keeler said. "Like Lehigh last week, they're a totally different team now than they were at the beginning of the season."

Keeler gave special praise to the highly-respected McDonnell and his staff.

"I don't think anyone in the country does as good a job of coaching as those guys do," Keeler explained. "They have really good personnel, their defensive line is outstanding and they play with a lot of passion and a lot of speed. Cornerback Dino Vasso could be the best corner in the league."

The quest for the semis starts now, in frigid Newark, Delaware.

After trading punts, WR Terance Fox made a spectacular one-handed grab when QB R.J. Toman was flushed out of the pocket to get a first down. Highlight material, that, down the right-hand side barely evading strong coverage.

Celebrity sightings at Tubby Raymond field: Vice President Joe Biden (UD alum) and Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, a former assistant coach to Sean McDonnell, is in town watching his former team. (Note to ESPN: ask him about playoffs and a Real national championship vs. the crystal ball he'll be playing for! Please?)

Toman's ankle, supposedly not 100%, looks awfully good after running designed QB runs through the middle for two big first downs.

Delaware's defense stiffens after first-and-goal. Toman and RB Sean Jellison's spread attack did not work.

A 23 yard chip-shot FG by Mike MacArthur is good, making the early score UNH 3, Delaware 0,

A beautiful catch by Delaware WR Nihja White - a reaching grab - is being reviewed in the booth. One of the funny quirks about playoff games on ESPN is that you get replay timeouts that you normally don't get during regular season games.

The officials reversed the call. The replay showed that he juggled the ball.

DE Brian McNally came around the edge, almost unobstructed, and gets a record-breaking sack of Devlin, forcing a punt.

Punts have greeted us in a defensive battle thus far.

Delaware finally getting a drive going. Wonder if the cold is affecting Delaware QB Pat Devlin, as he holds his hands behind himself to keep his hands warm. Either that or UNH's tough pass rush.
  8. Chuck B.'s Avatar
Crosby with a first down, and Delaware is getting into a rhythm offensively. Delaware mostly getting it down through the air, too.

Big DT Steve Young is down with an injury, looks like a poke to the eye. For UNH's sake hope it not a serious injury - he's an important run-stuffer on that Wildcat "D" line.

I agree Dave, a physical battle going on out there and players on both sides are banged up.

Delaware's offense isn't flashy, but they pick you apart. Devlin 8/8 on this drive.

RB David Hayes stopped in a huge upend tackle by DB Dino Vasso! 3rd and 2, that was a huge stop.

25 yard FG attempt is good after a time-consuming driveby Delaware. Delaware 3, UNH 3, 3:00 left in 1st half.

A promising drive after a kickoffout of bounds got nowhere, after an untimely penalty (New Hampshire's fifth already) and now the Wildcats punt away. Delaware gets the ball back with plenty of time - around 2 minutes - to possibly score again.

I tend to agree with you that injuries are a factor, especially on the UNH side. QB R.J. Toman was not well enough to start last weekend, and RB Dontra Peters is not 100% either, so New Hampshire is definitely a step slower than earlier in the season.

Also, both teams are operating on six days of prep instead of seven. And don't understimate the effect of travel. The Wildcats flew down to balmy Florida and back, and now are playing in sub-zero temperatures in Newark. I have to believe that has an effect, too.

As for the Hens, they are not really a speed team. They are built for effeciency and ball control.

Penalties a big factor, as a bonehead late hit on the receiver results in a first down on this drive. If New Hampshire is behind at half, they only have themselves to blame.

Rob Jones redeems his punt return ability with a great catch on the left side, turning around and getting both feet in bounds and stopping the clock.
  17. Chuck B.'s Avatar
LB Matt Evans with a huge sack of Devlin, maybe even getting them out of field goal range. Hope you like defense!

Delaware did a pretty good job against Lehigh, I felt. Notably was the blocking of the backs out of the backfield, who picked up the blitz very well. UNH's 4-3 is one of the best in FCS, though. Worthy of mention is that Uhll moved from guard to tackle last week - it may not have made a difference last week, but this week, against McNally at the tough UNH front four, may be different.

A badly shanked FG ends the half. Delaware 3, New Hampshire 3.

Wind may be more of a factor than people think. Wind direction played a part last week, even though it didn't reflect in the final score.

The third quarter sees an exchange of punts once again. Some energy in the crowd as the punt is partially blocked by the Hens. First and 10 about the 40 yard line of Delaware.
