Tennessee Tech @ Iowa, 2011

IOWA CITY, IA--I am in Hawkeye country for the Ohio Valley's Golden Eagle matchup with the Big Ten's Hawkeys for the first half of my double header in this state (will travel to Ames after this to see Northern Iowa play Iowa State tonight). This is the first time TTU has faced a team from the Big Ten Conference. TTU is experienced with 20 starters returning and 31 players that have at least started a game.

TTU is coming off a 5-6 record and 4-4 within OVC play. Iowa was 8-5 last year and won the Insight.com Bowl over Missouri a season ago.

Coach Watson Brown is in his fifth season at TTU, holding a 18-27 mark at the Cookeville, TN school. He as a career mark of 112-178-1. Iowa has Kirk Ferentz as their coach and holds a 89-60 mark for the Hawkeyes.

The temperatures are much better as we are in the low 70s and rain/thunder showers in the area. In fact, the Kinnick Stadium ticket officials have yet to let in the general ticket holders yet at this time (9:50 local). The kickoff is slated to be at 11:01.

Junior quarterback Tre Lamb leads the Eagle attack on offense and returns after missing the final three games due to injury. He is joined in the backfield by Dontey Gay (1,972 career all-purpose yards) as well as Georgia Southern transfer Adam Urbano.

The top TTU receiver is Tim Benford, who is second in career receptions and third in yardage for the Golden Eagles. TTU also returns the entire starting five upfront on the offensive line.

Defensively, the Eagles are led by linebacker Marcus Edwards, who led the OVC in sacks with 7.5. He is joined at the linebacker position by Jake McIntosh, who is the career leader in tackles currently on the roster with 177.

I am looking for the Eagles to be competative in this game given their experienced roster and given that Iowa is not as experienced.

The Golden Eagles get a false start and then call a time out on the next play. It is now 3rd and 13 from the 16. We have 10:58 left in the 3rd qtr.

TTU can't complete the 3rd down pass and had a 33 yard field goal attempt by Matthew Barker go wide right to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless.

Iowa takes over at the 20 yard line with just over 10:00 left in the third qtr.

The rain is coming down hard again after letting up for a while. Iowa is driving now and is down to the TTU 36. We have 7:08 left in the 3rd qtr.

TTU gets a roughing the passer call and two plays later, McNutt catches his second score of the game. Iowa 34 TTU 0 with 6:19 left.

Sounds a little sloppy and error-prone.

The rain is really coming down. TTU gets just a 7 yard punt into the wind from Nick Campbell. There is 4:13 left in the third qtr and there is a huge down pour coming in sheets right now as Iowa takes over.

The weather is getting bad and the game has been delayed for 30 minutes. I probably will have to leave early to this one in order to get to Ames.

At this time, we have 3:37 left in the 3rd qtr with Iowa leading 34 - 0. I will probably wait for the weather to lighten up and then head for Ames as this game is pretty much over at this point.

Ironically, Tennessee Tech's season opener against DII Lane College had a weather delay similar to this game as the game was called after 25 minutes of play. The game counted as a win for the Golden Eagles since they were in the lead at the time but all statistics from the game did not count.

Well, I am going to head out now. I hope for a more competative game tonight with UNI and Iowa State. From the weather radar, it does not appear this game will be restarted any time soon.

I heard on the drive over from Iowa City to Ames that the Golden Eagles scored but the final was 34-7.
