IOWA CITY, IA--I am in Hawkeye country for the Ohio Valley's Golden Eagle matchup with the Big Ten's Hawkeys for the first half of my double header in this state (will travel to Ames after this to see Northern Iowa play Iowa State tonight). This is the first time TTU has faced a team from the Big Ten Conference. TTU is experienced with 20 starters returning and 31 players that have at least started a game.
TTU is coming off a 5-6 record and 4-4 within OVC play. Iowa was 8-5 last year and won the Insight.com Bowl over Missouri a season ago.
Coach Watson Brown is in his fifth season at TTU, holding a 18-27 mark at the Cookeville, TN school. He as a career mark of 112-178-1. Iowa has Kirk Ferentz as their coach and holds a 89-60 mark for the Hawkeyes.
The temperatures are much better as we are in the low 70s and rain/thunder showers in the area. In fact, the Kinnick Stadium ticket officials have yet to let in the general ticket holders yet at this time (9:50 local). The kickoff is slated to be at 11:01.
Junior quarterback Tre Lamb leads the Eagle attack on offense and returns after missing the final three games due to injury. He is joined in the backfield by Dontey Gay (1,972 career all-purpose yards) as well as Georgia Southern transfer Adam Urbano.
The top TTU receiver is Tim Benford, who is second in career receptions and third in yardage for the Golden Eagles. TTU also returns the entire starting five upfront on the offensive line.
Defensively, the Eagles are led by linebacker Marcus Edwards, who led the OVC in sacks with 7.5. He is joined at the linebacker position by Jake McIntosh, who is the career leader in tackles currently on the roster with 177.
I am looking for the Eagles to be competative in this game given their experienced roster and given that Iowa is not as experienced.
