One of the things I have loved for years about the Football Championship Subdivision is the fact that you can catch up on teams around the country by watching Thursday night games.
Tonight, I am viewing the Murray State battle against Tennessee-Martin on Ohio Valley Conference Television and watching Hampton host Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the week on ESPNU.
Tennessee-Martin, which suffered a disheartening one-point loss in its OVC opener against league favorite Jacksonville State, didn't waste any time in jumping on Murray State — a team that many expected to challenge for the OVC crown.
The hometown Skyhawks burst out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Murray State turned a blocked punt into points a few plays later and added a field goal to cut it to 28-9 midway through the second period,
UTM came back with a field goal of its own after penalties killed the chance for seven points to reestablish some momentum at 31-9.
Bethune-Cookman and Hampton survived nearly an hour of lightning delays before finally getting started down near the Virginia coast.
Bethune-Cookman, facing a must win to stay in the MEAC race, dealt with the delay better and scored on a 10-play drive, with QB Jamarr Robinson traveling the final eight yards on an option play for the touchdown with about nine and a half minutes left in the first period.
It should be a fun evening of FCS play.
