Another Thursday night in FCS 9/22/11, MSU at UTM and B-CU at Hampton

One of the things I have loved for years about the Football Championship Subdivision is the fact that you can catch up on teams around the country by watching Thursday night games.

Tonight, I am viewing the Murray State battle against Tennessee-Martin on Ohio Valley Conference Television and watching Hampton host Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the week on ESPNU.

Tennessee-Martin, which suffered a disheartening one-point loss in its OVC opener against league favorite Jacksonville State, didn't waste any time in jumping on Murray State — a team that many expected to challenge for the OVC crown.

The hometown Skyhawks burst out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Murray State turned a blocked punt into points a few plays later and added a field goal to cut it to 28-9 midway through the second period,

UTM came back with a field goal of its own after penalties killed the chance for seven points to reestablish some momentum at 31-9.

Bethune-Cookman and Hampton survived nearly an hour of lightning delays before finally getting started down near the Virginia coast.

Bethune-Cookman, facing a must win to stay in the MEAC race, dealt with the delay better and scored on a 10-play drive, with QB Jamarr Robinson traveling the final eight yards on an option play for the touchdown with about nine and a half minutes left in the first period.

It should be a fun evening of FCS play.

Tennessee-Martin has over 500 yards, with two 100-yard rushers and a 250-yard passer tonight. Murray State still has major holes on defense and the Racers really won't get better until they address the problem.

And the flags just keep on flying at Bethune-Cookman. Will the first half ever end?

Finally it is halftime in the Hampton-Bethune game with Hampton winning 24-14.

With less than seven minutes remaining, Brockman hit a short pass for a TD on a drive fueled by running back Mike Harris (14 carries, 125 yards) to make it 48-26 UTM.

Murray State failed on another onside kick to give UTM excellent field position again.

And the final from UT-Martin is Skyhawks 48, Racers 26. And it wasn't really even that close.

The second half is underway between Hampton and Bethune-Cookman and B-CU is on the move quickly with a drive into Pirate territory on some slick passing from Jamarr Robinson.

An impressive drive for the Wildcats gave B-CU a first and goal at the Hampton 10 with 12:18 left in the third period.

Hampton has 248 yards and Bethune-Cookman has 241 thus far. The Pirates have been better through the air (129-77 yardage advantage) and the Wildcats have the advantage on the ground (164-119). Two turnovers for B-CU have hurt the Wildcats, as have nine penalties for 71 yards. Hampton has six penalties for 35 yards.

Keith Stroud dropped a pass in the end zone from Jamarr Robinson on a nice play fake and pass on second and goal from the eight. B-CU called time out on third and goal. Each team has already burned an early time out in the second half.

Jamarr Robinson rifled a pass to Eddie Poole for a touchdown and Hampton was also called for roughing the passer on the play. The extra point for the Wildcats cut Hampton's lead to 24-21 with 11:28 left on the 10-play drive.

QB David Legree accounted for 6-of-10 passing for 129 yards and one TD and seven rushes for 41 yards and two more TDs for Hampton in the first half. It will be interesting to see what kind of defensive adjustments that Bethune-Cookman makes in the second half as the Wildcats' hopes for another MEAC title rest on winning this game.

Bethune-Cookman allowed one first down and then clamped down on Hampton to force a punt.
  13. dcoulson's Avatar
A holding penalty on WR Keith Stroud has put B-CU in the hole on this drive.
  14. dcoulson's Avatar
Eddie Poole had beaten the Hampton secondary for a potential 86-yard TD pass, but Robinson under-threw the ball on second and long and the Wildcats were forced to punt with under eight minutes left in the third period.
  15. dcoulson's Avatar
Hampton converted a fake punt with a shovel pass for a first down.
  16. dcoulson's Avatar
Hampton got bogged down with penalties to pretty much kill the drive.

The TV crew just coined the term "miscellaneous whistles" to describe the screwy calls of the MEAC officiating crew. More and more flags. Pretty embarrassing for the MEAC.

Hampton had a second down and 44 and LOST yardage on the play. The Pirates had gotten down to the B-CU 38 on this drive.
  18. dcoulson's Avatar
Jackie Wilson has replaced Jamarr Robinson for B-CU at QB and used the read option to run the ball for 31 yards to the Hampton 39 on the first play. Hampton then got called for 12 players on the field on the next play.
  19. dcoulson's Avatar
The officials have truly lost control of this game.
  20. dcoulson's Avatar
Wilson picked up a first down at the Hampton 28.
