Another Thursday night in FCS 9/22/11, MSU at UTM and B-CU at Hampton

One of the things I have loved for years about the Football Championship Subdivision is the fact that you can catch up on teams around the country by watching Thursday night games.

Tonight, I am viewing the Murray State battle against Tennessee-Martin on Ohio Valley Conference Television and watching Hampton host Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the week on ESPNU.

Tennessee-Martin, which suffered a disheartening one-point loss in its OVC opener against league favorite Jacksonville State, didn't waste any time in jumping on Murray State — a team that many expected to challenge for the OVC crown.

The hometown Skyhawks burst out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Murray State turned a blocked punt into points a few plays later and added a field goal to cut it to 28-9 midway through the second period,

UTM came back with a field goal of its own after penalties killed the chance for seven points to reestablish some momentum at 31-9.

Bethune-Cookman and Hampton survived nearly an hour of lightning delays before finally getting started down near the Virginia coast.

Bethune-Cookman, facing a must win to stay in the MEAC race, dealt with the delay better and scored on a 10-play drive, with QB Jamarr Robinson traveling the final eight yards on an option play for the touchdown with about nine and a half minutes left in the first period.

It should be a fun evening of FCS play.

DL Demarcus Bell dropped Wilson for a five-yard loss on the next play, but Rodney Scott turned a screen pass into a touchdown on second down and 14 from the 33. He cut up the middle, kept his legs moving and churned into the end zone on a great play to put B-CU up 28-24 with 37 seconds left in the third period.

After Bethune-Cookman dominated the third period, we head to the fourth quarter with the Wildcats ahead by four points.

Deon Hanks broke up a pass for B-CU to keep Hampton from a go-ahead touchdown pass.

Legree kept a drive alive with a completion on third and 10 for a first down to the Hampton 41.

An option play to Chisholm gave Hampton a first down to the B-CU 29.

Harold Love III, all 325 pounds of him, put pressure up the middle to sack Legree on a key play and the Pirates misfired with a pass on third down to end the drive. B-CU got the ball back with 11:31 remaining and a chance to build on a four-point lead.

Jackie Wilson stayed in the game at QB for the Wildcats. Jamarr Robinson may have been banged up on his last drive. Good thing for the Wildcats that B-CU has more depth at quarterback than it did behind All-American Matthew Johnson last year. The lumps that the backups felt last year have made a difference in 2011.

Eddie Poole was going to beat the Hampton secondary again on third and long and the Pirates grabbed his jersey for pass interference to save a TD.
  9. dcoulson's Avatar
Hampton is up to 12 penalties for the game.

The game changed again on one play as Wilson had a pass deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Jeremy German who went 18 yards for a pick six to give Hampton a 31-28 lead with 9:15 to play.

If Hampton wins this game, it will be because of turnovers. The Pirates have 17 points off of three Bethune-Cookman turnovers.

Fourth and inches for B-CU and Hampton stuffed a screwed-up play. With 6:45 left, the Wildcat defense has to hold the Pirates, who start at the B-CU 44.
  13. dcoulson's Avatar
Hampton faced a third and two at the 36 and B-CU's defense came up with a stop with some great LB play.

Here comes a punt for Hampton and it bounces into the end zone with 4:52 left. B-CU will get the ball with 80 yards to go.

Rodney Scott picked up 17 yards on a screen pass from Jackie Wilson on first down, but Wilson had a ball batted down on first and 10 from the 37. On second down, Wilson completed a pass to Patrick Harris for 20 yards to the Hampton 43.
  16. dcoulson's Avatar
Rodney Scott used another counter to burst free to the Hampton 16.
  17. dcoulson's Avatar
After Scott's 17-yard scamper, Wilson scrambled for four to the 13 and then scrambled to hit Eddie Poole in the back of the end zone on a ball than went through the hands of a Hampton defender. B-CU is back in front 34-31 with the conversion to come after a time out with 2:50 left.

The extra point is on hold as the TD is being reviewed from the booth.

The replay confirmed the touchdown, taking a time out away on the missed challenge for the Pirates and Bethune-Cookman kicked the PAT to make it 35-31. Hampton needs a TD with under three minutes to play and one time out left against a tough Bethune-Cookman defense. What a game this has been.

Cameron McGee was the defender who missed a potential interception on Poole's clutch TD catch.

After a bobbled kickoff return, Hampton started the drive at the 18 with 2:40 left. Legree had a pass dropped on first down.
