Another Thursday night in FCS 9/22/11, MSU at UTM and B-CU at Hampton

One of the things I have loved for years about the Football Championship Subdivision is the fact that you can catch up on teams around the country by watching Thursday night games.

Tonight, I am viewing the Murray State battle against Tennessee-Martin on Ohio Valley Conference Television and watching Hampton host Bethune-Cookman in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the week on ESPNU.

Tennessee-Martin, which suffered a disheartening one-point loss in its OVC opener against league favorite Jacksonville State, didn't waste any time in jumping on Murray State — a team that many expected to challenge for the OVC crown.

The hometown Skyhawks burst out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter before Murray State turned a blocked punt into points a few plays later and added a field goal to cut it to 28-9 midway through the second period,

UTM came back with a field goal of its own after penalties killed the chance for seven points to reestablish some momentum at 31-9.

Bethune-Cookman and Hampton survived nearly an hour of lightning delays before finally getting started down near the Virginia coast.

Bethune-Cookman, facing a must win to stay in the MEAC race, dealt with the delay better and scored on a 10-play drive, with QB Jamarr Robinson traveling the final eight yards on an option play for the touchdown with about nine and a half minutes left in the first period.

It should be a fun evening of FCS play.

On second down, the Pirates got three yards on a dump pass and Legree was hit by Ryan Davis on third down and threw an incompletion. On fourth down, Legree scrambled for a first down from seven yards behind the line of scrimmage.

Legree ran for five more yards and completed a pass for a first down to Chisholm with under 1:20 to play at the Hampton 44. Javaris Brown then caught a pass for 35 yards to the B-CU 21 with 1:02 left.

Brown was open in the corner of the end zone, but Legree tried to fire to another receiver and missed out of bounds with 50 seconds left. Brown then caught a pass for nine yards at the 12 that was short of the sideline. Hampton then didn't get a time out from the 42-second mark until burning one with 21 seconds left.

On third and one, with no time outs left from the 12, Hampton is forced to wait for a review that will look at the spot of the ball.

The MEAC official pretty clearly mis-spotted the ball by a yard at the 13, instead of the 12, costing the Pirates about 22 seconds and a time out. The ball was re-spotted at the 12 for a Hampton first down, but the officials didn't change the clock. Oops.

Legree was nearly sacked on first down, but escaped to throw the ball through the end zone. Brown then dropped a pass on second down that would have ended the game, if he had caught it. Third and 10 with eight seconds left and the pass at the flag for Hicks goes out of bounds. One more play.

Legree threw a slant to Isaiah Thomas on the final play for a touchdown, with B-CU coming with a full linebacker blitz. Legree read the defense perfectly to see the field was open in the middle.

On replay, the ball appeared to come loose on one angle. After a review, it was ruled that the receiver didn't maintain control to the ground and Bethune-Cookman wins 35-31 in a very controversial finish. What a game and what a painful loss for Hampton. It was going to be painful for whoever lost this one.

As much as everyone might have been on the officials in this game, I think they got the call at the end right. Great win for Bethune-Cookman and a brutally harsh loss for Hampton.

The interesting thing about this is that last year, there would have been no review on the final play and Hampton would have won. And if this game had not been on television, there would have been no review of the late Hampton first down, or the touchdown play at the end.
