Northern Iowa @ North Dakota State, Oct. 29, 2011

FARGO, ND--I am in the Fargodome for today's game between two of the top three ranked teams in the polls. NDSU is ranked #2 in the latest Gridiron Index Poll (GPI) and Northern Iowa is ranked #3. Georgia Southern is ranked #1 currently but also has a big game this week against Appalachian State, the #6 ranked team in the GPI.

This game should be a defensive struggle if we go by the statistics so far. NDSU is the top ranked scoring defense and UNI is #2.

The two offenses have been productive when needed as well. The battle of quarterbacks is between the Panthers Tirrell Rennie, who has set a UNI record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 146. NDSU's Brock Jensen has thrown just one in his 149 attempts.

The top running backs are D.J. McNorton for NDSU and David Johnson for UNI with two good backups in Sam Ojuri and Carlos Anderson respectively.

The two lines I would say are equal both on the offensive and defensive sides.

On paper, these two teams couldn't be more evenly matched as seen with the statistics above.

I think the game will be decided by who gains more turnovers. Statistically, both are close in this category. UNI is a +13 and NDSU is a +11.

A other area might be who performs better on the special teams.

The home field for the Bison I think will also play a role. Standing room tickets are the only tickets open as of yesterday and believe most of those should be picked up. A crowd over 19,000 is expected and could rival the all-time attendance record today.

With that, I think the home field noise will cause some concerns for UNI and may result in some turnovers and some unforced fouls. As I stated in my column for the week, I think NDSU will pull out a close, low scoring game.

We shall see if this comes true or if UNI can overcome likely the most adverse crowd they have seen including the one point loss it had at FBS Iowa State.

A nice Matt Voigtlander punt and little on the return has UNI set up with 1st and 10 at their own 28.
  2. Kent's Avatar
Rennie is out at QB. Jared Lanpher is in.

    We have 9:13 left.
  3. Kent's Avatar
Lanpher shows some scrambling abilty to gain 8 but UNI is still 3rd & 2.

His pass on 3rd down is batted down to set up 4th & 2 with 8:34 left.

    UNI will punt.

Johnson on a nice misdirection play to Johnson and it goes for a score. UNI will go for two.

NDSU calls time out. 6:51 left in the game.

UNI's 2-point is no good on a pass from Lanpher. NDSU 24 UNI 19.

Game reset: Both teams with just 2 timeouts.

The UNI kickoff returned to the NDSU 40 but there is a flag on the play. The call is against UNI on a person foul against UNI.

That will set NDSU up to the UNI 46.

A nice run by Ojuri is sent back on a downfield holding call. NDSU is now at the 50 with a 1st & 14.
  10. Kent's Avatar
McNorton runs for 12 on the next play.

Ojuri gets nine on the next play for a NDSU first down to the UNI 29.

Two short runs by Ojuri and McNorton have NDSU with a 3rd & 8 af the UNI 27.

Clock is runnig with 3:20 to go.
  12. Kent's Avatar
McNorton is stopped after just two yards. 41 yard FG attempt from Jastram is good. NDSU 27 UNI 19 with 2:27 left in the game.
  13. Kent's Avatar
UNI still with a chance with just a 8 point difference.

The NDSU kickoff is returned nicely to midfield by Herring but there is a flag on the play--holding UNI. That sends them back to the 21.
  14. Kent's Avatar
Howard makes a nice catch for 9 and a flag on the play is a roughing the passer foul to send UNI out to their own 45.
  15. Kent's Avatar
Pass is overthrown by Lanpher on 1st & 10 from the 45.
  16. Kent's Avatar
UNI with a bad use of time. They are forced to use a timeout. We have 2:08 left in the game and the Panthers have just one timeout left.

2nd & 10 play is intercepted by John Pike and returns it to the Bison 29.

This one is just about over with just 1:47 left and just one timeout for UNI.

McNorton runs for four and UNI uses their last TO with 1:36 left.
  17. Kent's Avatar
Ojuri runs for a first down and gets out to the 46--there was an unsportsmanlike call on NDSU.

It will be first and 10 with 1:2 left so this one is still over.
  18. Kent's Avatar
One last kneel down and NDSU is 8-0 and likely will take over the top ranking next week with App State defeating Georgia Southern today.

Final here: North Dakota State 27 Northern Iowa 19.
