FARGO, ND--I am in the Fargodome for today's game between two of the top three ranked teams in the polls. NDSU is ranked #2 in the latest Gridiron Index Poll (GPI) and Northern Iowa is ranked #3. Georgia Southern is ranked #1 currently but also has a big game this week against Appalachian State, the #6 ranked team in the GPI.

This game should be a defensive struggle if we go by the statistics so far. NDSU is the top ranked scoring defense and UNI is #2.

The two offenses have been productive when needed as well. The battle of quarterbacks is between the Panthers Tirrell Rennie, who has set a UNI record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception with 146. NDSU's Brock Jensen has thrown just one in his 149 attempts.

The top running backs are D.J. McNorton for NDSU and David Johnson for UNI with two good backups in Sam Ojuri and Carlos Anderson respectively.

The two lines I would say are equal both on the offensive and defensive sides.

On paper, these two teams couldn't be more evenly matched as seen with the statistics above.

I think the game will be decided by who gains more turnovers. Statistically, both are close in this category. UNI is a +13 and NDSU is a +11.

A other area might be who performs better on the special teams.

The home field for the Bison I think will also play a role. Standing room tickets are the only tickets open as of yesterday and believe most of those should be picked up. A crowd over 19,000 is expected and could rival the all-time attendance record today.

With that, I think the home field noise will cause some concerns for UNI and may result in some turnovers and some unforced fouls. As I stated in my column for the week, I think NDSU will pull out a close, low scoring game.

We shall see if this comes true or if UNI can overcome likely the most adverse crowd they have seen including the one point loss it had at FBS Iowa State.

    UNI has it now past midfield at the 45 and now have a 2nd & 9.

    UNI has an incompletion on 2nd down and are now faced with a 3rd & 9.

    The Rennie pass is incomplete and the Panthers will punt.

    Kyle Bernard's punt goes into the end zone for a touchback. NDSU will have it 1st & 10 at the 20. We have 8:22 left in the 3rd qtr.

    Two incompletion has NDSU now at 3rd & 10 at their 20.

    Jensen keeps it but only gets nine so NDSU. Punt is returned to the 31 but a late hit call on NDSU moves it out to the Panther 48.

    UNI gets a short 1 yard pass and a seven yard run from Johnson to set up a 3rd and 2.

    Johnson makes the catch to the NDSU 36 for the 1st.

    John Pike intercepts Rennie for the first time this season at the NDSU 21. NDSU now with a 1st and 10 from there.

    We have 5:35 left in the 3rd.

    The score is still 17-13 NDSU.

    NDSU is helped out after a short pass catch by McNorton with a late hit by the Panthers. NDSU now a their own 44.

    NDSU has a third and 7 after two short gains form the 47.

    McNorton nearly gets the first down on a nice individual effort but NDSU will punt.

    Punt is fair caught at the UNI 17. We have 1:57 with NDSU still leading 17-13.

    Rennie is sacked for an 8 yard loss to start this drive.

    Johnson fumbles on the next play on a run up the middle. Kyle Emanual picks up the ball at the 3 and returned for the touchdown. NDSU leads 24 - 13 with 1:09 left in the 3rd qtr.

    UNI returns the kick to the 31. Offsetting personal fouls keep the ball right there.

    Johnson gains it out to the 48 and that is the last play of the 3rd qtr. NDSU 24 - UNI 13.

    UNI will be 1st & 10 from there to start the final frame.

    Two pass plays has UNI deep into NDSU territory. The Panthers have it at the NDSU 30.

    Holding on the Panthers moves them back to the 40 now with a 1st & 20.

    Rennie is sacked for a nine yard loss on the next play. It is 2nd & 29 from the NDSU 49.

    The 2nd down play goes for just four on a pass to Johnson. It is 3rd & 25 for UNI from the NDSU 45.

    Rennie runs to the NDSU 39 and appears to have twisted his ankle. He is still down being looked at.

    UNI will have 4th and 19 from here.

    The Kyle Bernard punt goes into the end zone for a touchback. NDSU ball with 11:32 left and the 11 point lead.

    A McNorton run and another after finding no one to throw to by Jensen has NDSU with a 3rd & 11.

    McNorton catches the ball for a 2 yard gain but NDSU will be punting.
