How the GPI Top 25 is Faring 11/19/11

Rate this Entry
Obviously a crucial week with all big games in the GPI top 25. I'm not expecting the FBS games to have a large impact on playoff selection since the GPI doesn't indicate seeding, bracket placement or game locations, it is all about the at-large. I would think all the at-larges will come from the current GPI top 25.

This week has four games between top 25 teams, two top 25 teams have already finished their season and three top 25 teams play FBS teams. Rankings based on the Gridiron Power Index (GPI).

1. North Dakota State won 37-21 at #74 Western Illinois
2. Sam Houston State won 36-14 at #53 Texas State
3T. Georgia Southern lost 45-21 at FBS Alabama
3T. Northern Iowa won 23-20 at #12 Illinois State (2OT)
5. Montana State lost 36-10 vs. #8 Montana
6T. Appalachian State WON 28-24 at #43 Elon
6T. Wofford won 28-27 at #19 Chattanooga
8. Montana won 36-10 at #5 Montana State
9. Lehigh won 37-13 vs. #71 Lafayette
10. Maine lost 30-27 at #14 New Hampshire
11. Towson won 28-17 at #60 Rhode Island
12. Illinois State lost 23-20 vs. #3T Northern Iowa (2OT)
13. Indiana State lost 35-28 vs. #52 Southern Illinois
14. New Hampshire won 30-27 vs. #10 Maine
15T. Old Dominion 9-2 ENDED SEASON
15T. Youngstown State lost 38-34 vs. #66 Missouri State
17. Harvard won 45-7 at #68 Yale
18. Central Arkansas 8-3 ENDED SEASON
19. Chattanooga lost 28-27 vs. #6T Wofford
20. Furman lost 54-32 at FBS Florida
21. Portland State lost 48-33 vs. #38 Weber State
22. James Madison won 34-17 at #39 Massachusetts
23. Delaware won 26-16 at #77 Villanova
24. Samford lost 35-16 at FBS Auburn
25. South Dakota lost 38-37 at #35 North Dakota

I'll update this as the day goes on.

If the higher ranked team wins in each of these games today then the field should be (given AQs already clinched, seeds not in any order):

    AQ
    -----
    SEED- Montana State
    SEED- Georgia Southern
    SEED- North Dakota State
    SEED- Sam Houston State
    Albany
    Lehigh
    Norfolk State
    Stony Brook
    Tennessee Tech
    Towson

    At-Large
    -----
    SEED- Northern Iowa
    Appalachian State
    Indiana State
    Maine
    Old Dominion
    Youngstown State
    Wofford

and probably even if they lose to the higher ranked opponent today:
    Illinois State
    Montana
    New Hampshire

Or maybe an 8-3 Central Arkansas or Portland State.

Certainly that is a lot of ifs and as we know from prior seasons, the way it finishes will change all of this speculation.

After the polls are released we will see what the final regular season GPI indicated.

With Youngstown and Indiana State losing you have to think Central Arkansas is in.

You have to think that the seeds are going to be (no order) NDSU, SHSU, Georgia Southern, UNI and ... Appalachian State or Wofford? Or Montana (they beat the higher ranked team). Being benevolent, the committee may just give it to Montana because it is close and it spreads out the AQs a bit more than having two for the SoCon and two for the Missouri Valley. Methinks they will surprise us completely.
