Montana State @ Drake, 2012

I went Des Moines last night with my two sons to watch Rob Ash's Montana State team trip to Des Moines, to play his former team in Drake. Ash coached Drake for 18 years before going to Bozeman five years ago.

The Bulldogs gave the #4 ranked Bobcats all they could handle and it proved to me that the Pioneer Football League deserves to have its champion play in the FCS 20-team playoff field.

MSU wound up winning 34-24 but Drake lead into the fourth quarter 24-21 and played toe-to-toe with the Bobcats.

Drake quarterback Mike Piatkowski out performed Montana State All-American hopeful DeNarius McGhee in my opinion. Piakowski threw for over 300 yards, while McGhee throw for just over 200 yards.

The Drake defense seemed to provide pressure all game long to McGhee. It certainly did not look like a full-funded FCS team to one that does not provide athletic scholarships.

I will look forward to seeing Drake play Indiana State next week to see if they can duplicate the feat on the road.

I will also look forward to Drake hosting San Diego in a few weeks in what looks to me like the PFL championship game.

After seeing this game in person, I think the PFL champion should get an at-large spot this year provided they get to the seven win DI total. This game is proof to me that the league should be in the playoffs now and this also validated the expansion of the playoffs starting next season to include the PFL champion.
