Northern Iowa @ Iowa, Sept. 15

IOWA CITY, Iowa--I am in Kinnick Stadium today to see if UNI can do a little better against their second Big 10 game of the year. Remember, UNI narrowly lost to Wisconsin two weeks ago 26-21 and had a chance with the ball late to take the lead.

Last week, the Panthers had little opposition when they played their first home game of the year against DII Central (OH) State--winning 59-0.

It was just three years ago when UNI almost beat the Hawkeyes when they had two chances for a game winning field goal but had both attempts blocked for a 17-16 Iowa win.

This year, Iowa looks down after narrowly beating Northern Illinois and losing to in-state rival Iowa State.

To me, Iowa looks ripe for an upset and I would not be suprised if UNI travels north to Cedar Falls with a victory.

It is an absolute perfect day for football with temperatures currently in the mid-70s with almost no clouds in the sky.

This is my fifth or sixth trip to this stadium and the first time the game will start away from the 11:00am Central start.

The second half of the Wisconsin game impressed me with the play of redshirt freshman Sawyer Kollmorgan. He should some normal freshman jidders in the first half but seemed to grow up in the later half of play.

After playing in Wisconsin, I don't think any of the UNI players will be intimidated by the 70,000+ in this stadium.

I have called a couple upsets already this year and I am going to call another one today. I will take UNI by a late field goal that won't be blocked this time like it was three years ago.

But we shall see, Iowa seems to start slow each year and then grows so turnovers will play a key role in this one that I believe is two evenly matched teams.

Iowa gets the key first down on a pass and gets another one on the next play on two nice passes by Vandenberg.

Weisman for 11 on the next play. He is wearing down the Panther D. 1st & 10 at the UNI 46.
  2. Kent's Avatar
Weisman gets just one on the next ground gain. Vanderberg has no one to throw to on the 2nd down play.

Must stop here on 3rd & 9 at the UNI 45 for the Panthers.

Davis makes a great catch for Iowa for a gain of 11 to get the Hawkeye first down to the UNI 34.

Weisman gets three and a personal foul call on UNI has Iowa down to the Panther 16. Need a turnover if you are UNI.

The Hawkeyes use Brad Rogers on this play down to the 1. 3rd & goal at the 1 for Iowa.

UNI stops Weisman short of the goal line. 4th & goal at the one. Iowa uses their first time out. We have just 2:52 left.

Iowa will go for it after the TO.

Betting it is Weisman and UNI stops him. UNI is still in this game and takes over at the 1. We have 2:51 left in the game.
  8. Kent's Avatar
The crowd is getting into the game for the first time with UNI now at thier own 1.
  9. Kent's Avatar
These TV timeouts seem to take the momentum out of the game, don't they.
  10. Kent's Avatar
Sinkfield is underthrown after getting open on the first down play.

2nd & 10 play is a slant and UNI gets out to the 17.
  11. Kent's Avatar
Johnson gets 4 on 1st down and seven more on 2nd down for a 1st down but UNI needs to speed things up here. We are down to 1:34 left.
  12. Kent's Avatar
    1st & 10 from the UNI 29 --two incompletions set up 3rd & 10 from here.
  13. Kent's Avatar
Owens catches on 3rd down for a 22 yard gain to the Iowa 49. 1:05 left
  14. Kent's Avatar
Sinkfield gets 11 to the Iowa 34 but can't get out of bounds. TO #1 for UNI. 0:54 left.
  15. Kent's Avatar
UNI needs two scores with 0:54. UNI has two Time Outs left to reset things.
  16. Kent's Avatar
Kollenmorgen is sacked and UNI is forced to use another time out--#2. 0:46 left and a 2nd & 14 in order for UNI from the Iowa 38.
  17. Kent's Avatar
Owens catches across the middle for 5 but UNI uses their last time out. Not sure about going across the middle for such a short gain.

3rd & 9 at the Iowa 33 and it goes incomplete and there is a UNI holding call. Iowa sends UNI back to the Iowa 44.

    3rd & 19 is an incompletion. 4th & 19 with 0:29.
  18. Kent's Avatar
Kollmorgen overthrows Sinkfield and that is the ball game with just 0:23 left.

Iowa takes a knee to finish it.

FINAL: IOWA 26 NORTHERN IOWA 16
