Northern Iowa @ Iowa, Sept. 15

Rate this Entry
IOWA CITY, Iowa--I am in Kinnick Stadium today to see if UNI can do a little better against their second Big 10 game of the year. Remember, UNI narrowly lost to Wisconsin two weeks ago 26-21 and had a chance with the ball late to take the lead.

Last week, the Panthers had little opposition when they played their first home game of the year against DII Central (OH) State--winning 59-0.

It was just three years ago when UNI almost beat the Hawkeyes when they had two chances for a game winning field goal but had both attempts blocked for a 17-16 Iowa win.

This year, Iowa looks down after narrowly beating Northern Illinois and losing to in-state rival Iowa State.

To me, Iowa looks ripe for an upset and I would not be suprised if UNI travels north to Cedar Falls with a victory.

It is an absolute perfect day for football with temperatures currently in the mid-70s with almost no clouds in the sky.

This is my fifth or sixth trip to this stadium and the first time the game will start away from the 11:00am Central start.

The second half of the Wisconsin game impressed me with the play of redshirt freshman Sawyer Kollmorgan. He should some normal freshman jidders in the first half but seemed to grow up in the later half of play.

After playing in Wisconsin, I don't think any of the UNI players will be intimidated by the 70,000+ in this stadium.

I have called a couple upsets already this year and I am going to call another one today. I will take UNI by a late field goal that won't be blocked this time like it was three years ago.

But we shall see, Iowa seems to start slow each year and then grows so turnovers will play a key role in this one that I believe is two evenly matched teams.

Garmon is a quicker back for Iowa but this seems to suit the Panther defense better. Garmon is hurt on this 1st & 20 play but does not look too serious after losing a yard on the play.

2nd & 21 from the 31 for Iowa. We have 5:08 left in the opening half.

Weisman is the running back now for Iowa. He gets six on the 2nd down play to set up a 3rd & 15 from the 25. Tavaughn Blair was banged up for UNI on the playf.

Weisman gets a 21 yard reception as he bowls over some UNI players on the play. He might be just what Iowa needs.

1st & goal for Iowa at the UNI 4. Vandenberg fumbles the snap on the 1st down play but the Hawkeyes recover for a two yard loss.

The 2nd & goal play is a pass to Fiedorowicz that is just too far on the right side. The third down play is on the left side of the field to Davis that is too wide as well.

Mike Meyer kicks a 24 yard field goal to extend the Iowa lead back to four.

Iowa 17 UNI 13 with 2:46 left in the 2nd qtr.

The Iowa kickoff is returned by Smith of UNI to the UNI 21. UNI will have 2:41 to try to get a score before the half.
  6. Kent's Avatar
Anderson with a two yard gain for the Panters on first down and gets seven on the second down play. 3rd & 1 from the 30 for UNI.

Anderson on the wildcat and is tackled for a loss to the UNI 28. 4th & 3 for the Panthers and we will see the first punt of the game. Timeout for Iowa with 1:26 left.

Great punt by Kyle Bernard of 70 yards. It is returned for 10 back to the Iowa 11. 1:11 left in the opening half.
  8. Kent's Avatar
Weisman is the running back still for Iowa and gets 12 on the ground and then gets a swing pass for a yard on the next play out to the 22. He also fumbled but recovered it himself. Time out Iowa. 0:43 left in the opening half.

Two yard loss on the screen pass. Iowa won't run another play. Halftime.

    Iowa 17 UNI 13.

Just about how I thought it would go in the first half. UNI needs to get some stops on defense or force some turnovers to win though.
  10. Kent's Avatar
UNI will also need to solve the power running game. It seems Iowa can get 4-5 yards on any given play.

Here are some stats at the halftime break:

TOTAL YARDS: 214 yards for Iowa, 186 for UNI
RUSHING YARDS: 108 yards for Iowa, 53 for UNI
PASSING YARDS: 133 for UNI, 106 for Iowa
3RD DOWN CONVERSIONS: 1-of-4 for UNI, 5-of-6 for Iowa

That last stat is the most telling. All but one of the 3rd down plays was a short yardage situation. Getting some stops of the running game on 1st & 2nd down.

We are just about to start the 2nd half and still think UNI has what it takes but likely this first drive, which will be Iowa's will be critical to get a stop for the Panthers.

The UNI kickoff goes into the end zone for a touchback. Iowa ball at its own 25 but there is a offsides call on UNI so they will move it out to the 30.
  12. Kent's Avatar
Weisman is the running back for Iowa and gets 3 on first down. Better job of getting to the ball carrier there for the Panthers.

The Iowa TE Fiedorowicz gets 12 on the 2nd down play for a 1st down for the Hawkeyes.

Martin-Manley gets 51 one the next play on a catch & run to set up a 1st & goal. Weisman gets his third TD of the game on the next play. PAT is good.

Iowa 24 UNI 13 with 13:10 left in the 3rd qtr.
  13. Kent's Avatar
Not what the doctor ordered for UNI in giving up some big chunks through the air on this past drive. Iowa doing a good job of mixing in the pass game with the power running game to keep the Panther defense guessing.

Next drive for the Panthers is almost a must score drive the way the Iowa offense is going right now.
  14. Kent's Avatar
Carlos Anderson returns the kickoff from the goalline out to the UNI 36. Nice start for the Panthers with this return.
  15. Kent's Avatar
Two Johnson runs has the Panthers in a 3rd and 2. Need to get this for UNI.
  16. Kent's Avatar
Johnson is short of the first down with no gain and UNI is three and out. Bernard is in to punt and sends to the end zone. 1st & 10 Iowa at the 20. We ahve 10:59 left in the 3rd qtr.
  17. Kent's Avatar
Weisman for three on 1st down and Vandenberg is forced to throw it away on 2nd down.

3rd & 7 at the 23 for Iowa and Weisman can't handle the pass from Vandenberg to Iowa their first three and out.

The punt from Conor Kornbrath is faircaught by Anderson at the UNI 37. 10:02 left in the 3rd qtr.
  18. Kent's Avatar
Kollmorgen overthrows LeMaster on the first down play and Anderson on the second down play.

    3rd & 10 for UNI.
  19. Kent's Avatar
Kollmorgen is picked off on the next play by Tom Dontatell from Iowa at the Iowa 42. Terrible pass there as it did not appear as if any Panther receiver was in the area even.
  20. Kent's Avatar
UNI stops Iowa for a three and out to bail out the INT. Iowa to punt from their 49.
