Northern Iowa @ Iowa, Sept. 15

Rate this Entry
IOWA CITY, Iowa--I am in Kinnick Stadium today to see if UNI can do a little better against their second Big 10 game of the year. Remember, UNI narrowly lost to Wisconsin two weeks ago 26-21 and had a chance with the ball late to take the lead.

Last week, the Panthers had little opposition when they played their first home game of the year against DII Central (OH) State--winning 59-0.

It was just three years ago when UNI almost beat the Hawkeyes when they had two chances for a game winning field goal but had both attempts blocked for a 17-16 Iowa win.

This year, Iowa looks down after narrowly beating Northern Illinois and losing to in-state rival Iowa State.

To me, Iowa looks ripe for an upset and I would not be suprised if UNI travels north to Cedar Falls with a victory.

It is an absolute perfect day for football with temperatures currently in the mid-70s with almost no clouds in the sky.

This is my fifth or sixth trip to this stadium and the first time the game will start away from the 11:00am Central start.

The second half of the Wisconsin game impressed me with the play of redshirt freshman Sawyer Kollmorgan. He should some normal freshman jidders in the first half but seemed to grow up in the later half of play.

After playing in Wisconsin, I don't think any of the UNI players will be intimidated by the 70,000+ in this stadium.

I have called a couple upsets already this year and I am going to call another one today. I will take UNI by a late field goal that won't be blocked this time like it was three years ago.

But we shall see, Iowa seems to start slow each year and then grows so turnovers will play a key role in this one that I believe is two evenly matched teams.

Iowa with a terrible punt of just 11 yards to set UNI up in great field position at their own 40. We ahve 7:42 left in the 3rd qtr with Iowa still up by 11.

Johnson with a nice seven yard run up the middle for the Panthers

2nd & 3 from the 47, Owens catches the swing pass for a four yard gain to get a 1st down at the Iowa 49.

Johnson for another seven yard run gain on the first down play to the Iowa 27.

And its Johnson again on a screen pass for 12 to the Iowa 15.
  5. Kent's Avatar
Anderson gives Johnson a break on the next play but UNI is called for holding to send them back ot the 25 for a 1st & 20 from there.
  6. Kent's Avatar
Phil Wright gets his first catch of the game but for just three yards to set up 2nd & 17 from the Iowa 22.

    Kollmorgen's pass is overthrown to Owens for a 3rd & 17 play.
  7. Kent's Avatar
Johnson catches the pass but gains just 14 to the Iowa 8. UNI will be in field goal formation for a 25 yard attempt and Sieverson hits it to bring UNI within 8.

Iowa 24 UNI 16 with 2:47 left in the 3rd qtr.

Holding call on the drive was the critical error to prevent the TD.
  8. Kent's Avatar
The UNI kickoff goes to the four and returned out to the Hawkeye 27.
  9. Kent's Avatar
Vandenberg looks bad on a comeback throw to Davis for an incomplete.

Weisman for six on the 2nd down play to set up a 3rd & 4 from the 33.
  10. Kent's Avatar
Iowa gets the first on a pass play to Fiedorowicz for 12 and Weisman gets 14 on a rund on the next play to set up Iowa 1st & 10 at the UNI 46.
  11. Kent's Avatar
Weisman gets five on first down but just two on the next play on ground to set up a 3rd & 3.

That play will end the 3rd qtr and the 3rd down play will come as we start the fourth qtr.

Our score is Iowa 24 UNI 16.
  12. Kent's Avatar
Big third down stop needed here for the Panthers at the UNI 39.
  13. Kent's Avatar
Iowa with a big catch by Davis to keep the drive going. He gets to the UNI 25.

Iowa in the hurry-up mode. The long pass to Davis is over thrown to set up 2nd & 10 from the UNI 25.
  14. Kent's Avatar

Varmah Sonie with a nice pass breakup on 2nd down. 3rd & goal from the UNI 7.

The 3rd down play goes to Davis on a pass but is stopped at the 1.

Iowa settles for a 19 yard FG from Meyer to extend their lead back to 11.

Iowa 27 UNI 16 with 12:22 left in the game.
  17. Kent's Avatar
UNI needs to get in the end zone and not settle for the field goals. This is what hurt the Panthers against the Hawkeyes three years ago. UNI will get their chance again with the kickoff.

The kickoff goes out of the endzone. 1st & 10 at the 24 for the Panthers.
  18. Kent's Avatar
Johnson gets ten up the middle for UNI 1st & 10 from the 35.

Johnson gets three on the next play out to the 38 to set up 2nd & 7.

Kollmorgen keeps on a qb keeper for a four yard gain. 3rd & 3 from the 42.

Nice throw by Kollmorgen but Iowa defense plays the pass well to knock it away to set up a UNI punt.
  19. Kent's Avatar
UNI gets a nice punt to the Iowa 11 but it is called back on an illegal formation to force Bernard to kick again. Iowa returns for little to their own 19. We have 10:09 left in the game. This is a must stop in my opinion for UNI here to have a chance.
  20. Kent's Avatar
Vandenberg pass goes long for an incompletion on first down.

The second down play is a run by Weisman for six to set up a 3rd & 4 at the Iowa 25.
