FARGO, N.D.--I am in the Fargodome and it is the first time seeing the new turf on the floor. This turf looks impressive and much better than the old style Astrotuf that was here before. And what a game I have today with the #3 and #1 ranked teams respectively meeting in this one.

Winter has come early to the north country with a little snow on the ground with temperatures right now in the lower 40s. I drove throw some snow showers on my way to North Dakota last night. But it is a nice 70 degrees inside this facility and it is good we have a roof over our heads today.

Like my column for this week, I mentioned that these two teams seem like mirror images of each other. The offenses to me seem to be very close. We shall see how much the one game suspension of starting running back Sam Ojuri has on the Bison but I believe his backup John Crockett showed more in last week's win over Northern Iowa so I don't think there will be much of a drop off for NDSU.

The defenses I would have a slight edge to the Bison. Plus this is homecoming and around 19,000 fans are expected to pack in the Fargodome to provide the home field advantage to NDSU.

I think the key for the Penguins will be to score first to take some of the crowd momentum down. If NDSU scores early and gets up, it will keep the crowd in the game and keep the Penguins from audiablizing like they like to do at the line of scrimmage.

As I mentioned in my column, I think NDSU will win a closely contested game and will likely win the turnover margin to do so.

But we shall see. YSU owns a win over Pittsburgh on the road so it is not out of question to think they can do something similar today.

Tee minus 20 minutes to kickoff. Can't wait for this one to start.

    Hess was hurried and overthrows the 2nd down pass.

    3rd & 9 from the YSU 26. Dome is load again. Andrew Williams catches the Hess pass but gets just two on the sideline.

    4th & 7 from the YSU 28. Punt by Nick Liste goes for 63 yards to the NDSU 16. Great punt to send the Bison back.

    The first down play for NDSU is run by Crockett of just a couple yards that gets called back on a holding call on the Bison.

    1st & 18 from the NDSU 8. Crockett gets the ball again to the NDSU 14 for a gain of 6.

    2nd & 12 from the NDSU 14.

    Ryan Smith gets 13 on a nice comeback route to get NDSU a first down.

    1st & 10 from the NDSU 27. Vraa nearly with a nice sideline catch but had a toe on the sideline to call it incomplete.

    Crockett gets just one on the second down play.

    3rd & 9 from the NDSU 28. Jensen hits Lang across the middle with a 15 yard pass that YSU left uncovered.

    Lang gets two on the 1st down play to the NDSU 45 as we end the 1st qtr.

    NDSU leads 14-7 and will have it 2nd & 8 from the NDSU 45 when the 2nd qtr begins.

    Ralph, yes more scoring in the 1st qtr than I thought there would be. Game is settling in now though and think the defenses will start to perform better from here on out.

    Crocket sweeps right but gets just a yard to set up a critical 3rd & 7 from the NDSU 46.

    Jensen overthrows Gebhart to set up a punt for the Bison.

    Ben LeCompte punts it and fair caught at the YSU19, where the Penguins will take over.

    Cook up the middle for two for YSU to the YSU 21.

    2nd & 8 at the YSU 21. Williams catches the Hess pass as Hess stayed in the pocket nicely as the NDSU line was nearly to him. Gain of 13 on the play.

    1st & 10 at the YSU34. Time out YSU.

    1st & 10 at the YSU 34. Williams on an end around for five.

    2nd & 5 at the YSU 39. Torrian Pace gets the carry for YSU for four to set up a 3rd & 1 from the YSU 43.

    YSU goes with a quick play to Pace up the middle and the Penguins get the first down. tot he YSU 49.

    Pace gets 3 on the first down play.

    2nd & 7 from the NDSU 48. Hess can't find anyone open down field so he keeps it himself for a gain of four.

    3rd & 3 from the NDSU 44. Dome is in the yellow decibel range as the Fargodome puts up the true decibel meter but NDSU calls a time out before the play gets off.

    Nice play action fake from Hess hits his tight end who was wide open on the play for a gain of 24.

    YSU in business now with a 1st & 10 at the NDSU 20.

    Hess overthrows Will Shaw on first down.

    2nd & 10 from the NDSU 20. Cook on an option pitch from Hess gets four. Huge third down play here for both teams.

    3rd & 6 from the NDSU 16. Hess is intercepted by Marcus Williams near the goal line for an NDSU touchdown. The return is 98 yards and this place is going wild. (this was just a yard short of the school record for an interception return).

    PAT is good.

    NDSU 21 YSU 7 with 8:35 left in the first half.

    Wow, how good is Marcus Williams? The play was one where the NDSU defense was in zone coverage and Williams had the underneath area. He floated back to grab the ball and had clear sailing to the endzone.

    The kickoff is returned to just the 17 after a 12 yard return by Andre Stubbs.

    The momentum on that last interception was amazing. The dome is getting very load after that play.

    YSU gets a yard from Kevin Watts on an option from Hess on first down.

    2nd & 9 from the YSU 18. Hess overthrows his receiver.

    3rd & 9 from the YSU 18. Shaw catches the pass but it is short of the first down by two yards.

    4th & 2 from the YSU 25. YSU will punt.

    The YSU punt is fielded by Ryan Smith. It was a 53 yard boomer that Ryan Smith returns for a little to the NDSU 27.

    We have 6:46 left with NDSU winning 21-7.

    Jensen hits Vraa but the officials meet and they say he was out of bounds.

    2nd & 10 from the NDSU 27. Lang gets one on a carry up the middle.

    3rd & 9 Smith with a nice 12 yard catch to move the chains for NDSU.

    1st & 10 from the NDSU 40. Crocket up the middle for a nice five yard gain.

    2nd & 5 from the 45. Gebhart with the comeback route for a pass play of 11.

    Crockett goes with a full head of steam for a gain of 22 to the YSU 22. Bison are in business again.
