Missouri State at Iowa

Rate this Entry
I am in Iowa City today for Missouri State Coach Terry Allen's return to the state. If you remember Allen was the coach at Northern Iowa nearly two decades ago.

Both teams are coming in at 0-1 with home losses to start the season. Missouri State lost 23-17 to Northwestern State last week, while Iowa lost to Northern Illinois 30-27.

The weather today in eastern Iowa is scheduled to be hot today with a high in the upper 90s.

I thin it will be key for the Bears to get a fast start to stay in this game. They will need to win the turnover battle and get some breaks to pull off Missouri Valley's third upset over a BCS conference team. Remember, North Dakota State (over Kansas State) and Northern Iowa (over Iowa State) were the two other victories last week.

I think Iowa will be able to handle the Bears, however, as Allen has not rekindled the magic he had with UNI while in Springfield. A win today though would go a long way towards getting back to that way.

We shall see and I hope for a competative game.

The Bears take over at their own 20. Despite showing little on offense, the Bears defense is keeping them in the game.

Let's see if the Bears can mount some offense on this drive to tie or at least get some points on the board.

The Bears defense has held their own in this game to keep Iowa with just one touchdown. The key in the second half will be to get some offense going to try to pull off this upset.

    Here are some halftime stats:

First downs: Iowa 11, Missouri State 5
Rushing yards: Iowa 109, Missouri State 22
Passing yards: Iowa 45, Missouri State 45
TOTAL YARDS: Iowa 204, Missouri State 67
Turnovers: Iowa 0, Missouri State 1

With those, Missouri State is a little lucky to be down just 7. Their defense has bent some but held tough when it needed to be with the exception of the lone Hawkeye touchdown drive.

The Bears have also dodged the one turnover to avoid giving up the field goal.

The Hawkeyes will have the ball to start the 2nd half so this will be a key drive in the game in my opinion to see if the Bears can hang in there.

The MSU kickoff is downed in the end zone. Iowa will have it 1st & 10 at their own 25.
