Bearkats Set to Begin Camp as Bears Right in the Midst of the Action

On Feb. 24, we reported on this blog that media outlets were stating that Auburn quarterback Tyrik Rollison had planned to transfer to Sam Houston State.
According to Tigers head coach Gene Chizik:
We're going to play it by ear. I don't pay any attention to any of the external hearsay," Chizik said. "He's in school at Auburn, he's focusing on his aca*demics and that's what I know. As the end of the semester unfolds, obviously we'll know more."
Information seems to lean on the fact that neither SHSU or Auburn was informed of the transfer per the rules of NCAA compliance. I have been informed that the news actually caught many people off guard. Rollison, himself, has never stated that he would be leaving for any particular school. The only person to come out and state that he would head back to Texas was his father, who probably spoke too soon.
For the time being, this will be one of those stories in which we'll continue to monitor.
More on the Bearkats
• SHSU added a wide receiver from Blinn Junior College (Texas) to their recruiting class. The player? Chad Froechtenict. Blinn, the former stomping ground for current Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz, has built a strong JUCO program over the years. Froechtenict has several ties to the SHSU campus, as his father Bill, played basketball in Huntsville, Texas in 1976 and 1977. Per the SHSU release, he currently holds the school record for most assists in a game, dishing out 18 against Abilene Christian.
• Speaking of players hitting the field for the Bearkats, Fritz will open his first camp with the squad this coming Monday. SHSU returns 36 lettermen from last year's 5-6 team and Fritz will look to fill the holes left by 26 seniors who completely their eligibility last fall. The team will take part in 15 practice sessions, culminating with the Orange-White game on Apr. 24.

Central Arkansas is in the midst of spring practice.
According to head coach Clint Conque, junior Nathan Dick and redshirt freshman Wynrick Smothers are competing for the starting quarterback spot. The position is vacant as Robbie Park completed his eligibility a year ago.
The team has suffered several setbacks in the injury department in their spring camp.
Wide receiver Dominique Croom injured his knee on the first day while fellow wide receiver Willie Landers is limited this spring after injuring his knee on the first day of practice in the fall. Defensive lineman Marshall Loyd was down with mononucleosis and the team was optimistic for his return after spring break.
Other News on the Bears
• In a news byte that fell under the radar while we were away, UCA quarterback coach Zak Clark has left the program. The former Division II All-American for the Bears was hired in January and will be replaced by another All-American, Nathan Brown, who will move over from the tight end position to coach the quarterbacks.
