TXST Seeks QB Answer, UTSA Hires OC

Does Texas State have a quarterback or possibly two quarterbacks able to step in for the departed Bradley George?

The initial impression of Bobcats head coach Brad Wright in wake of the team's annual Maroon and Gold Scrimmage is a resounding yes.

"I thought we had two quarterbacks step up tonight and show that they can win some games for us next fall," said Wright. "They have a long way to go, but this was the best they have played all spring."

Tim Hawkins and Eric Soza were the two quarterbacks that Wright was eluding to. The signal-callers combined to complete 14 of 25 passes for 126 yards and six touchdowns.

Though they did not answer the question of whether the Bobcats will have a suitable player to fill the quarterback position, this was a step in the right direction for Wright's staff.

We will revisit this conversation in the fall, particularly as TXST is tested early and often in their out of conference slate with games against Houston, Southern Utah and Cal Poly.

It's official.

UTSA head coach Larry Coker announced the addition of Neal Neathery as defensive coordinator on the Roadrunners' staff this past week.

Neathery comes to Texas from Srake, where he served as an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for two seasons. Prior to that stop, he was an associate head coach for Wabash College and before that, a defensive coordinator for Ottawa (Kan.).

With Neathery on board, UTSA will be able to recruit heavy into Kansas and Oklahoma.

The UTSA tidbit that we hinted at in our last blog came to fruition as UTSA announced a two for one deal with Baylor. The Bears will host the Roadrunners in 2017 and 2019 with a trip to San Antonio scheduled in between in 2018.

Southeastern Louisiana started their spring practice season this past Friday. The Lions have now embarked on a spring that includes 15 practices. SLU should be one of the favorites to capture the league title, especially with several offensive and defensive skill players set to return for Mike Lucas in 2010.
