As much as Boise State’s triumph over Virginia Tech this week made for compelling television nationally, in Montana it was cause for introspection.

To glimpse the Broncos’ ascent in the polls and vault into the national championship picture is, for fans of the Grizzlies, to be at once reminded of their own past and prodded about their future.
Stan Parrish preached the importance of focusing “one game at a time” all offseason. His players had a similar tune. No way Ball State will ever overlook its next opponent, they’ve told us.

That mantra better not be empty words. Not this week.

With a matchup against Purdue looming Sept. 18, Ball State approaches a trap game Saturday night against Liberty. One momentary slip, one mental lapse, and the Cardinals will lose to a Football Championship Subdivision opponent for the second straight season.

Wouldn’t that be embarrassing?

Jacksonville State is back in the football headlines, this time for some positive reasons.

The Gamecocks, based in Jacksonville, Ala., and in the NCAA’s Championship Subdivision, delivered the first shock of the 2010 season when they upset Mississippi 49-48 in double overtime last week. They expect a record crowd of 24,000 at newly expanded Paul Snow Memorial Stadium on Saturday when they face Chattanooga (0-1) in their home opener.

The buzz on campus is a welcome change from a year ago when Jacksonville State was banned from the postseason because of poor classroom performance as measured by the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate. JSU went 8-3 and would have earned the automatic NCAA playoff berth awarded the Ohio Valley Conference champion.
The Northern Iowan projects junior Tirrell Rennie will start game at quarterback

Tirrell Rennie spent the off-season competing with Zach Davis for the starting quarterback position.

Question marks have surrounded the 2010 University of Northern Iowa football team for months.

Who will be the starting quarterback? How is an offensive line with only three combined starts going to hold up? Will the defense have to carry most of the load this season?

The Panthers hope to turn those question marks into periods Saturday as they commence their 2010 campaign at 6:37 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.

With the NFL season set to kick off tonight and the Division I season already well under way, it seems that the Ivy League is one step behind the pack. While teams like Boise State and Alabama are already staking their claims for a National Championship berth, Cornell and its fellow Ancient Eight foes are still in preparation for their season openers –– the Red’s is set to kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 18. But while the season remains over a week away, it is never too early to look ahead to what the team hopes will be a bounce-back year in 2010.

So, where does Southern Utah University go from here?

On Tuesday, the Thunderbirds were left without a viable football league when it was announced that UC Davis and Cal Poly will take their programs to the Big Sky Conference.

Montana athletic director Jim O’Day praised the Big Sky’s decision to add UC Davis and Cal Poly as football-playing members.

“You bring two great academic institutions who do things the right way who are great fits for the league,” he said.

One problem.

The Big Sky’s expansion leaves the Great West Conference with only three football schools: Southern Utah, South Dakota and North Dakota.
Tim Walsh has been on the road into the Big Sky Conference before.

“This is the second time I’ve done this,” said Cal Poly’s football coach, who’ll see his Mustangs added to the Big Sky by 2013 - or 17 years after his former team, the Portland State Vikings, made the same move in 1996. “It should be fun.”

Walsh seems to be having fun in his second season in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He came back to his home state after spending two years as Army’s offensive coordinator. The 14 seasons before that he was PSU’s head coach.

This is a long ways away from Portland, Ore.
Ugly loss against Georgetown in ‘03 reminds coach win isn’t guaranteed.

As painful memories go, it doesn’t get any worse for Lafayette football Coach Frank Tavani than Oct. 4, 2003.

On that day, Georgetown, anything but a dominating force in the Patriot League, drove 95 yards on 14 plays in the fourth quarter for the touchdown that gave the Hoyas a 17-10 victory on Fisher Field.

“I never was more embarrassed about our play,” Tavani said Tuesday during the weekly media luncheon focusing on Saturday’s league, season and home opener against Georgetown. “Not that we had lost to Georgetown; they came in spanked us and outplayed us. The embarrassing part was about how we played.”

The end is near for the Great West Football Conference, which learned Tuesday that next season will be the last in the league for two of its five members.

UC Davis and Cal Poly, charter members of the seven-year-old FCS conference, announced they were leaving the Great West to join the Big Sky Conference starting with the 2012 season.

That exodus means that the University of South Dakota, North Dakota and Southern Utah will have to find new homes for their football programs or play independent schedules after next season.
The score may not have been pretty Saturday night as Tennessee Tech fell 44-3 in its opener against No. 17 Arkansas, but the Golden Eagles had plenty to be happy about.

“I thought our kids really competed well,” said Tech coach Watson Brown during this morning’s Ohio Valley Conference teleconference. “We hung in there. I didn’t think we played real well – I think we can play a lot better than we did. There were some composure things that we haven’t done here in the past.”
