America’s colleges and universities used more than $2 billion in student fees — an average of more than $500 per student — to subsidize rapidly growing university athletic budgets, as Ohio University professor Richard Vedder wrote at Bloomberg today. Those fees can top $1,000 a year at some schools, and as Vedder writes, reliance on them ends up making college more expensive for students and often places the burden on the poorest students. And most of the time, students don’t even know they’re paying the fees.
The NCAA’s Academic Performance Program revamped the Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in 2011, wary of the struggles historic black colleges and universities were facing in their compilation and submission of data each year.
New rules that went into place with the 2012-13 academic year don’t seem to have helped the situation, however.
This could finally be Rocco’s season
This may be the season a Danny Rocco-coached team reaches the FCS playoffs after two unusual exclusions. Twenty-four teams, up from 20, will make the 2013 FCS field, including three additional at-large qualifiers.
Rocco’s Richmond team last year went 8-3, 6-2 CAA Football, and was the league’s first team since 1996 with those records to be excluded from the playoffs.
I caught up with former SIU football coach Jerry Kill, who is now at Minnesota, at the Liberty Wealth Management 5K/Fun Run in Carterville a few days ago.
Liberty Wealth Management is owned by former Saluki quarterback Joel Sambursky, who is still very tight with his old coach. Kill said a few words to the runners and walkers, walked the course at Walker’s Bluff with his wife and took a few minutes to chat with me.
Big Sky Conference Commissioner Doug Fullerton commiserates with Montana football fans who are frustrated with the NCAA’s prolonged investigation into the Griz football program.
At the time it was said the investigation could last 12 months; it’s now at 16 months and counting.
