How possible BCS conference realignment might affect the top tier of NCAA championship football

The offseason for Division I college football fans is a usually long, arduous wait between spring practice and summer practice. This year, because of the actions of a few commissioners belonging to rich conferences, the offseason for fans of FCS schools has been anything but boring.

Take the example of Montana, one of the crown jewels of FCS football and perfect example of what sensible, championship-caliber football is all about.

This is the year that the Big South gets a crack at the post-season as the league acquires automatic qualifier status with the expansion of the FCS playoffs.

So, the 21 conference games bring added significance this year. From the first Big South game on Oct. 2 (Presbyterian College at VMI) to the final three on Nov. 20, it will be fun to see what develops. Stony Brook and Liberty finished at the top of the Big South in 2009. Will their game in Lynchburg on Nov. 20 decide the playoff team? Or will another Big South squad go on a run and capture the berth?

Becoming a champion-caliber performer in any sport requires talent, dedication and hard work. In a sport such as swimming, the willingness to put in long hours of practice can make the difference between first and second place. Those long hours of practice are no stranger to Skylar Davis, and they have helped the Gustavus Adolphus College swimmer become one of the top distance swimmers in the Upper Midwest.

In the FCS football world, however, fans are wondering whether Villanova can do something no other school has done: win a national championship in men’s basketball and football in the same year.

What do you do when you have achieved something you had thought was a major goal only to find out it was not what you wanted? David Martinson had wanted to play hockey for the Air Force Academy. The Carleton Knights, who started the conference season 1-4, swept through the field, winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs for the first time in school history. The Knights, who rank third with 18 appearances in the Playoffs, had reached the title tilt twice before, losing to Gustavus in 1997 and to St. Thomas in 2006. They would not be denied this year, however, as they downed Gustavus 78-71 in overtime for the championship and the MIAC's automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III playoffs. ...

Talent is an essential part of an athlete’s success, but it’s far from the only component. Without a drive to succeed and a commitment to the sport, an athlete will never rise to the top of his sport, no matter how gifted he might be. Joe Scott is, without question, a most talented basketball player. What has enabled him to elevate his game is an intense passion for becoming the best he possibly can be and the willingness to work long and hard to make that a reality. That combination of talent and determination has helped the University of St. Thomas standout become one of the top players not just in the MIAC, but also in the nation.

During the past four seasons, Aaron Damjanovich has rewritten Bethel University’s hockey record book. He holds every meaningful record a goalie could hold: best goals against average, save percentage, wins and shutouts for a season and career shut outs and wins. Some might consider his net-minding as an apt tune-up for his post-collegiate career choice. Aaron hopes to be a saver of souls, not goals, as he enters the ministry as a speaking pastor.
