USD senior linebacker Joe Martin ( Lake Oswego, OR) was named the Pioneer Football League defensive player of the week for his performance in the Toreros 13-7 home win over Marist this past Saturday. Martin intercepted a pair of passes in a defense-dominated contest in wet, rainy and muddy conditions at Torero Stadium. Martin's first interception came in the end zone and stopped a Marist drive that had reached the San Diego nine-yard line. His 45-yard return of that pick set up a San Diego scoring drive. His second interception stopped a Marist fourth-quarter drive. Martin's pass breakup came later in the quarter and helped stall a Marist drive.
