The Jackson State University football team might be banned from competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game for the next two years because of poor academic numbers.

For a third straight year, the Tigers’ football program has fallen below the NCAA’s benchmark score of 900 for Academic Progress Rate, a rolling four-year figure used by the NCAA to calculate academic performance.

Full APR reports for 2006-2010 were released Tuesday. Teams that score below 900 face a four-step penalty ladder.
